The AI boom is hitting Southeast Asia hard, and it isn’t just about software anymore. The physical infrastructure demands are getting absolutely massive. Vertiv, a global heavy-hitter in data center critical infrastructure, just dropped a major anchor in Malaysia with the official opening of their brand-new, 236,000-square-foot manufacturing plant in Senai, Johor.

If you’ve been following the regional tech landscape, Johor’s meteoric rise as a primary data center hub isn’t news. By planting this facility right in the heart of Senai, Vertiv is positioning itself perfectly to feed the insatiable appetite for AI and high-density computing architecture across Southeast Asia, Australia, and New Zealand.

What’s Happening Inside Vertiv Johor?

This isn’t just a simple assembly warehouse; Vertiv has built an end-to-end engineering, manufacturing, and heavy-duty testing ecosystem. The site is specifically geared toward minimizing deployment risks for enterprise and colocation providers by stress-testing hardware under real-world conditions before it ever reaches a data center floor.

Here is a breakdown of the advanced hardware coming out of the Johor pipeline:

  • Liquid Cooling Infrastructure: To handle the brutal thermal output of next-gen AI chips, the factory is rolling out Vertiv CoolChip Coolant Distribution Units (CDUs). These systems handle direct-to-chip liquid cooling and rear-door heat exchangers for ultra-dense server racks. The facility even features specialized flushing environments to ensure the extreme cleanliness required for liquid cooling loops.
  • Prefabricated Power Systems: The facility will build Vertiv Power Modules and Power Skids. Because these are integrated and modularly built off-site, they can slash power system deployment times by up to 50% compared to standard on-site construction.
  • Unified Overhead Systems: The Vertiv SmartRun system will also be manufactured here. It bundles high-density busways, liquid cooling pipes, and containment structures into a single overhead package, accelerating on-site fit-out times by a staggering 85%.

The Big Picture for Regional Tech & Talent

As Vertiv’s CEO Gio Albertazzi and regional VP Paul Churchill pointed out, when you are scaling highly sophisticated AI environments, proximity and execution speed matter. Instead of waiting months for critical components to ship across continents, regional data center operators now have a massive, ISO-standard production powerhouse right in their backyard.

Vertiv strategically selected Johor as its flagship Asian manufacturing hub to deepen its presence in one of Southeast Asia’s fastest-growing data center corridors. As regional data center operators scale dense, high-powered AI environments utilizing next-generation hardware like NVIDIA supercomputers, proximity and speed to market become critical.

Establishing a massive local footprint allows Vertiv to dramatically slash equipment deployment times by producing advanced infrastructure, such as liquid cooling CoolChip units, prefabricated power modules, and integrated overhead systems, right in its customers’ backyards to completely bypass the months-long shipping delays associated with moving heavy hardware across continents.

Beyond immediate proximity to hyperscalers, Johor offers an ideal combination of regional connectivity, local support, and capacity relief from neighboring Singapore’s strict land and energy constraints. The geographic transition turns Johor into a natural overflow hub for massive digital infrastructure projects.

Tuan Haji Natazha Hariss, Chief Executive Officer of Invest Johor, warmly welcomed Vertiv’s investment, stating that it reflects growing global confidence in the state’s potential as a premier hub for digital infrastructure and advanced manufacturing. He emphasized that beyond the initial capital influx, the project brings meaningful long-term economic benefits to the state by creating high-value tech jobs, enhancing local industry capabilities, and fostering critical skills development for the domestic workforce.

Representing the federal perspective, MIDA Johor Director Mohamad Reduan Mohd Zabri accompanied the official delegation, highlighting the agency’s vital role in guiding the critical infrastructure giant through the regional expansion process. Ultimately, Vertiv’s decision to choose Malaysia was heavily accelerated by this proactive assistance from both MIDA and Invest Johor, alongside a highly educated, technical local talent pool.

This ideal ecosystem allows the massive manufacturing facility to efficiently scale its highly technical production loops while creating up to 500 high-value engineering and technical jobs in the region when it’s fully operated in 2027.

With the region rapidly transforming into the digital engine room of Asia, Vertiv’s Johor facility is a timely reminder that the future of AI is heavily reliant on the advanced hardware keeping the lights on and the chips cool.

The first phase of the Vertiv factory in Senai is now operational, focusing on developing and testing Vertiv CoolChip coolant distribution units for data centers utilizing NVIDIA GB300 supercomputers. By the end of this year, the facility will enter its second phase to produce CoolChip products with power capacities of 2,300W and above for regional data centers, with Vertiv expecting the plant to reach full production capacity by mid-2027.
