AI data centers are chugging the world’s energy like no tomorrow as we speak, and not every country has the power grid infrastructure to support that demand, nor are they willing to compromise on performance; therefore, they are more willing to turn towards upping the efficiency charts. So here’s what Samsung’s new SOCAMM2 LPDDR5X design comes into play.

SOCAMM2 combines low-power memory technology with a detachable, modular server form factor to help with higher bandwidth and better power efficiency, while still giving system builders the flexibility they expect from server-class memory – just the thing to help out these energy-hungry hardware while allowing the possibility of sustainable scaling.

The Korean manufacturer says that it can deliver more than twice the bandwidth of traditional RDIMM while using over 55% less power (better thermal management too), solves the issue of requiring soldering, and also reduces downtime and lowers total cost of ownership. n top of that, the shift from RDIMM’s vertical layout to SOCAMM2’s horizontal orientation improves space utilization, allows more flexible heat-sink and airflow designs, and works with both air and liquid cooling setups.

Currently, Samsung is working closely with NVIDIA to help put these designs into officially certified and accelerated platforms while continuously pushing the industry towards formal standardization, such as contributing to JEDEC guidelines for better and smoother integration across AI platforms.
