The P55G V5 comes in a rather handsome matte black packaging with a dash of red accent. The front depicts the “money shot” of the P55G V5 itself along with the Gigabyte logo, product name and some slogans.

Emptying the box for accessories, you’ll get a Global Warranty card, User’s manual, a windows fresh installation guide, some installation discs, and of course, the power brick and cable.

The P55G V5 Gaming Notebook

The cover of the P55G V5 is a plain matte black surface with barely anything on it except for the shiny Gigabyte logo in the center.

Flipping it open reveals a 14″ matte screen, keyboard, and trackpad. A classic laptop so far only differentiated by whats inside.

Stickers galore!

On the right side you’ll have an indication on the processor series, the GPU brand and that the speakers are Dolby Digital Plus certified.

On the left, a larger sticker for the specifications and some features, Gigabyte’s warranty sticker and free additional RAM??? Sweet!!

In the middle of it all is the trackpad lined with LED indicators at the bottom, a very good location compared to having it on the sides of the laptop.

Speaking of the sides, on the left is a VGA output, LAN port, HDMI out, USB3.0 type C and USB3.0 type A.

Oh, and of course, a huge exhaust vent right before that with a Kensington lock port.

On the right are where you’ll find the audio and microphone out, two more USB3.0 type A ports, DVDRW drive and a power port.

The underside features more vents along with other standard stuff like bar codes, safety, and health standard stickers and of course, rubber feet, four of them that keeps the P55G V5 from sliding when in use. No battery compartments visible here so one can’t easily swap it out.

The Innards

Removing some screws and popping the underside open reveals all that makes the P55G V5 “tick” so to speak. Already, we saw some puzzling factors.

Behold! an empty slot where the optical drive is supposed to be? hmm… Not quite. It’s an additional 2.5″ HDD/SSD slot in case if you need some extra juice on storage. As most people doesn’t really uses optical drive anymore, Gigabyte has decided to make use of that under utilized space for a greater purpose.

And an empty M.2 slot as well? I guess one can’t have all the good stuff on the get go.

RAM department is furnished by Crucial with 8GB of 2133MHz DDR4. One can slot in another stick of RAM if you need more.

The Battery pack is also a little messy, looks like someone was rushing to put this thing together.

The blower exhaust for the P55G V5, we’ll see if it is up for the task later on.

Software: Gigabyte Smart Manager

The P55G V5 comes with its own proprietary software that allows users to manage each and every function available on the gaming notebook with ease.

One of the features that we find really useful is the Fan Tweak that allows users to customize the cooling fan speed rather than relying on the temperature controlled fan speed for the maximum cooling performance.

Usage Experience & Testing
The P55G V5 packs a GTX960m inside hence testing it will mean running a bunch of games in our arsenal to see if we could truly have an enjoyable experience on the P55G V5.
Gigabyte P55G V5 Gaming Notebook Review 71
As you can see from the chart, most AAA titles run at a ‘Playable’ framerate at ultra/ultimate/very high settings, some doing better than others. This is promising as running these games on high settings should satisfy the average gamer on the go. However, if you’re after graphical fidelity, then the P55G V5 might not be for you.
Gigabyte P55G V5 Gaming Notebook Review 72
To test the cooling performance of the Gigabyte P55G V5, we’ve gone with Prime95 and FurMark to stress both CPU and GPU to exert the maximum heat output. Do note that this stress test is our case study that is meant to test the capability of the P55G V5 under the worst case scenario which is unlikely to happen for heavy gaming and normal usage.

We’ve also tested the P55G V5 with a more realistic test case for lightweight office work and web surfing, as well as running graphically intensive games. The result displays a much more pleasant looking numbers, but the GPU temperature reading looks concerning as it topped 76°C which we consider rather high.

Battery Life
The battery life for the P55G V5 didn’t last too long under heavy usage as it only managed to sustain for 2 hours and 8 minutes after a heavy gaming session under high-performance mode before the battery went dead. While running under power saver mode for lightweight usage i.e document processing, reading, web browsing, the P55G V5 can last for 6 hours and 24 minutes.

Running games like Tom Clancy’s The Division, Watch Dogs and Crysis 3 on full details is taxing a lot on the GTX 960M and the average FPS you’ll be getting hovers around the so-called playable 30fps by some game developers. Going lower with the settings will of course results in a higher FPS, though it’s up to the user to decide for the settings which they find comfortable to game on without losing too much graphical detail.

Short battery life issue can be a nuisance for the P55G V5 but as far as we can tell, but this happens to pretty much all gaming notebooks that we’ve reviewed in the past and you will have to bear with it for now as the only way to run the gaming notebook at its full potent is to connect it to its power source.

With MSRP of RM4299, we’d say that what the P55G V5 can deliver to the end user is pretty much a fair deal as a decent gaming notebook compared to most products of the same tier, especially for its 8GB memory which its competitor from the same tier offers only 4GB of memory in total. Unless if the aesthetics aspect such as illuminated keyboard is something one is insisting on having, the P55G V5 might not be the one to go for as it doesn’t comes with illuminated keyboard like what other competitor brands like ASUS, Alienware, etc can offer on their gaming notebooks in the same tier – the keyboard does lights up, but not for the fonts, number and symbols.

  • Decent graphics performance
  • Comes with 8GB of Memory
  • Additional slot for 2.5″ SSD / HDD
  • Lightweight and easy to carry around
  • Adjustable fan speed via Gigabyte Smart Manager software

  • Costly
  • Cooling performance for GPU isn’t ideal
  • Limited battery life
