GIGABYTE has been expanding its range of white-themed components in recent years, giving enthusiasts more options when putting together a clean, all-white PC build. The company’s push toward cleaner cable management also goes back to 2022, when it introduced the Project Stealth concept in collaboration with Maingear.
The idea was fairly straightforward: move as many cables as possible to the back of the motherboard to create a much cleaner-looking interior. That concept has since evolved into GIGABYTE’s Stealth Ice series, which brings the rear-connector approach to a wider range of motherboards and compatible components.
This time, we are taking a look at the GIGABYTE B850M AORUS STEALTH ICE, a compact mATX motherboard designed around the same concept while keeping the white aesthetic that has become increasingly popular among PC builders.
Unboxing and Design
The first thing that stands out about the B850M AORUS STEALTH ICE is, naturally, the white design. GIGABYTE has carried its ICE theme across the motherboard, giving it a clean appearance that should work particularly well with white-themed builds. But the more interesting part is what happens on the other side of the PCB.
Instead of placing the usual power, fan, and front-panel connectors around the visible side of the motherboard, GIGABYTE moves them to the rear. This back-connect layout helps keep most of the cables hidden once the system is assembled, resulting in a much cleaner interior.
To maintain the clean appearance from the front, GIGABYTE has also added a metal decorative section around the DIMM area to conceal exposed solder points from the rear-mounted connectors. Flip the motherboard around, and there is a pre-installed metal backplate that adds structural support while giving the board a more finished look.
For showcase-oriented builds, this approach makes quite a bit of sense.
Power Delivery and Memory
Despite being an mATX motherboard, the B850M AORUS STEALTH ICE is equipped with an 8+2+2 phase power design. While this is not positioned as an extreme-overclocking motherboard, the power delivery should have enough headroom for high-end Ryzen processors, including the Ryzen 9 9950X3D, under typical daily workloads.
For memory, there are four DDR5 DIMM slots supporting high-speed memory configurations. GIGABYTE also includes its X3D Turbo Mode, which is designed to optimize system settings for Ryzen processors with 3D V-Cache.
This is particularly relevant for users building a gaming-focused system around one of AMD’s X3D processors. However, actual memory and CPU performance will ultimately depend on the processor, memory kit, and BIOS configuration.
Expansion and Storage
The compact mATX form factor does not mean storage and expansion have been overlooked.
The primary graphics card slot is a PCIe 5.0 x16 slot with GIGABYTE’s PCIe UD Slot reinforcement and PCIe EZ-Latch Plus mechanism. There is also a secondary PCIe 4.0 x4 slot for additional expansion hardware.
Storage is handled by three M.2 slots. The primary slot supports PCIe 5.0 x4 and is equipped with an M.2 Thermal Guard heatsink, while the other two slots operate at PCIe 4.0 x4 and sit beneath the larger M.2 Thermal Guard Ext. heatsink.
GIGABYTE has also equipped all three M.2 slots with its EZ-Latch Plus and EZ-Latch Click mechanisms. These tool-less mechanisms make installing and removing SSDs considerably easier, especially for users who frequently swap storage devices.
For an mATX motherboard, this gives the B850M AORUS STEALTH ICE a fairly flexible storage configuration without taking up additional space.
Rear I/O and Connectivity
Connectivity is also fairly comprehensive for a motherboard of this size.
The rear I/O includes HDMI and DisplayPort outputs, alongside multiple USB ports covering USB 2.0, USB 3.2 Gen 1, and USB 3.2 Gen 2 connectivity. There is also a USB Type-C port for newer peripherals and external devices.
Networking is handled by a Realtek 5GbE LAN controller, while wireless connectivity comes from the Realtek RTL8922AE, with Bluetooth 5.4 support. Audio is handled by the Realtek ALC1220 codec.
One particularly interesting addition is the onboard 64GB Flash Memory that comes pre-loaded with network drivers. This can be useful after a fresh Windows installation, allowing users to get the required network drivers without having to prepare another USB drive just to get the system connected to the internet.
First Impressions
The GIGABYTE B850M AORUS STEALTH ICE is an interesting take on the compact AM5 motherboard. Rather than simply giving the board a white makeover, GIGABYTE has combined the aesthetic with its rear-connector approach to address one of the biggest visual problems with modern PC builds: cable clutter.
The back-connect design makes the most sense when paired with a compatible case, but when everything is set up correctly, the result can be considerably cleaner than a conventional motherboard layout. At the same time, GIGABYTE has managed to retain a fairly complete feature set, including PCIe 5.0, multiple M.2 slots, high-speed networking, Wi-Fi and support for high-frequency DDR5 memory.
