Seagate has unveiled the Exos M series, a new lineup of HDDs featuring advanced technologies designed to achieve unprecedented storage capacities. Leveraging the Mozaic 3+ platform and Heat-Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR) technology, the Exos M series significantly increases the areal density of platter drives, offering up to 32TB of storage for business and industrial applications. Additionally, Seagate is sampling 36TB drives at the moment to deliver its promise of the “36” number.
Currently, Seagate is the sole manufacturer capable of mass-producing 3.6TB per platter drives, with the potential to scale up to 10TB per platter. This innovation presents a cost-efficient storage solution that is particularly appealing to data centers and cloud storage providers. The high capacity and affordability of these drives make them a strong contender for industries that require large-scale storage.
Mozaic 3+ has already been adopted by industry leaders like Dell Technologies to provide substantial storage for AI factories running demanding workloads. Since not all AI-related sectors have the resources for full flash-based storage, the cost-effectiveness and massive capacity of the Exos M series HDDs stand out as an ideal alternative.
