NVIDIA has officially announced DLSS 4.5, the next evolution of its Deep Learning Super Sampling technology. DLSS 4.5 introduces major updates to both upscaling and frame generation, bringing a second-generation transformer model for Super Resolution and a new 6X Multi Frame Generation mode. The goal is smoother visuals, broader performance gains, and more adaptive behavior to match your display’s refresh rate.
The biggest upgrade in image quality comes from the 2nd-generation transformer model for DLSS Super Resolution. NVIDIA says this model uses significantly more compute than the original and has been trained on a much larger, high-fidelity dataset.

That extra capacity is designed to improve temporal stability and reduce visual artifacts like shimmering and ghosting that can appear during motion or on fine detail surfaces. The idea is to make upscaled frames look more stable and closer to native resolution across a wide range of scenes. This new transformer model is already available in DLSS 4.5 today through the NVIDIA App in beta, and can be applied across more than 400 games and apps.
On the frame generation side, DLSS 4.5 introduces two big concepts:
6X Multi Frame Generation

This is an expanded mode of NVIDIA’s frame generation technology that lets the GPU produce up to five AI-generated frames for every one native frame, which NVIDIA calls a 6X multiplier. The result can be dramatic boosts in perceived frame rate, especially on high-refresh displays. For example, in path-traced 4K games on RTX 50 Series GPUs, NVIDIA is showing up to 35 percent higher frame rates when shifting from 4X to 6X mode.
Dynamic Multi Frame Generation

This feature works a bit like an automatic transmission for frame generation. Instead of sticking to a fixed multiplier, DLSS 4.5 monitors your GPU’s performance relative to your display’s refresh rate (120 Hz, 144 Hz, 240 Hz, etc.) and dynamically adjusts how many frames it generates. The idea is to give you smoother output with the least overhead needed, higher frame generation when the load is heavy, and scaled-back generation when you don’t need it.
Combined, Dynamic Multi Frame Generation and 6X mode aim to make high-refresh gaming (including 240 Hz and beyond) significantly smoother, even with path tracing and other heavy rendering effects enabled.
The more advanced frame generation features, including Dynamic Multi Frame Generation and the new 6X Multi Frame Generation mode, will arrive this spring for RTX 50 Series GPUs through a future update to the NVIDIA App. At launch, NVIDIA says over 250 games and apps will support these features on Blackwell-based cards.

DLSS has evolved rapidly over eight years, but DLSS 4.5 represents a shift toward smarter, more adaptable rendering. The second-generation transformer model isn’t just about a marginal bump in quality; it’s designed to make upscaled images more stable over time and motion, something that matters a lot in real gameplay.
Meanwhile, the leap to 6X frame generation and dynamic scaling is clearly aimed at high-refresh gaming, where hitting 240 Hz or higher consistently can make a big difference in feel and responsiveness. The work NVIDIA has done here suggests the company is pushing frame generation beyond just boosting benchmark numbers and toward something that adapts in real time to your hardware and display.
DLSS 4 vs DLSS 4.5
| Feature | DLSS 4 | DLSS 4.5 |
|---|---|---|
| Super Resolution Model | 1st-gen transformer | 2nd-gen transformer with larger dataset and compute |
| Image Quality | Already strong | Improved temporal stability and fewer artifacts |
| Frame Generation | Up to 4X | Dynamic Multi Frame Gen + up to 6X |
| Frame Pacing | Fixed behavior | Adaptive scaling to target refresh rates |
| Broad Support | All RTX GPUs | All RTX for SR; RTX 50 Series for advanced FG |
| Release Status | Established | Available now for SR; FG in Spring 2026 |
DLSS 4.5 is not just incremental. It blends smarter AI with more flexible frame generation logic, giving gamers better visuals and smoother performance across a wide range of titles and hardware. With backward compatibility out of the box and high-end features rolling out soon, it offers genuine upgrades both to current RTX users and to the next wave of RTX gamers chasing high refresh and high fidelity.
One of the strong points NVIDIA highlighted is backward compatibility. All GeForce RTX GPUs can already use the new DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution right now via the NVIDIA App beta, just enable the update and set the DLSS model to “Latest.” A full release of the app and supporting driver is scheduled to go live on January 13, 2026.
