NVIDIA has announced it will be acquiring the company behind Slurm, which is known as SchedMD, that provides the workload manager that quietly runs a huge portion of the world’s most powerful supercomputers.

Despite gobbling up the AI software provider, Team Green says that Slurm will remain open-source and vendor-neutral, continuing to serve the broader HPC and AI community across all kinds of hardware and software setups. As AI and HPC workloads grow more complex, with massive clusters running parallel jobs that need precise queuing, scheduling, and resource allocation, NVIDIA is positioning Slurm as a critical piece in making sure those systems stay efficient as they scale.

Both parties have been working for over a decade, with NVIDIA continuing its investment in Slurm’s development, speeding up access to new systems for users on its accelerated computing platform, and continue supporting heterogeneous clusters so organizations can mix different hardware while benefiting from the latest Slurm capabilities. Currently, no sides have publicly disclosed how much the acquisition costs.
