MSI has officially revived one of its most legendary graphics card brands with its latest limited edition GeForce RTX 5090 32G LIGHTNING Z, and this is not your everyday high-end GPU. This is a product that exists for a very specific audience – enthusiasts who want maximum performance headroom, unique hardware features, and a limited-edition collector’s vibe right out of the box.

What You Get in the Box

From the moment you open the packaging, it is clear that this card is built to impress. MSI includes more than just the card itself. Alongside the GPU you’ll find accessories such as a BIOS toggle tool for switching between profiles, and a USB-C to USB-A cable that the card uses to communicate with the integrated display panel.

The inclusion of these practical accessories shows that MSI expects buyers to interact with both the card’s power profiles and its visual features right away, without needing to source extra cables or adapters.

Design and Build

At the heart of the RTX 5090 32G Lightning Z is an all-new visual and thermal identity. The card features a full-cover liquid-cooling setup with an external radiator, which is large enough that many builders will want to plan their case layout carefully before purchasing. The radiator measures 394 x 120 x 56 mm, and the GPU itself is a substantial 260 x 151 x 61 mm in size.

A dedicated USB-C port on the card’s I/O connects to the 8-inch display integrated onto the card, letting you show system statistics, custom images, or animations. MSI provides the necessary cable in the box to make this setup easy.

The backplate and shroud incorporate carbon fiber accents and Lightning Z-specific styling, emphasizing that this is a premium and limited-edition product. Each unit is numbered as part of a global run of just 1,300 cards, highlighting its exclusivity.

Cooling and Power Delivery

Cooling is a core focus for the LIGHTNING Z. The card uses a next-generation high-pressure pump with a hybrid-fin radiator design. Dense and sparse fin sections create alternating hot and cold zones, improving heat exchange efficiency and airflow across the liquid loop.

This cooling hardware is paired with a full-cover cold plate that contacts the GPU, VRAM, and MOSFETs, giving effective thermal control for both everyday use and extreme overclocking sessions.

For power delivery, MSI equips the card with dual 12V-2×6 power connectors, allowing users to unlock even greater potential of the RTX 5090. Having both connectors plugged in not only supplies the GPU with more power, it can also helps to balance out the power load to reduce the stress on the power connectors.

Dual BIOS Power Profiles

One of the card’s defining features is its Dual vBIOS setup. There are two distinct power profiles:

  • OC Mode capped at 800W TGP
  • Extreme Mode capped at 1000W TGP

Switching between these modes requires the included BIOS toggle tool and must be done with the system powered off. This gives enthusiasts a way to balance power draw, thermals, and performance depending on how hard they want to push the card.

With a 1000W profile, MSI recommends a 1600W+ power supply to make sure the card and the rest of the system have enough headroom.

There are even reports in extreme overclocking circles of unlocked BIOS variants hitting much higher power draws—up to 2500W in LN2-cooled setups—but those are beyond consumer use.

Performance Orientation

Official specifications list 21,760 CUDA cores, 32GB of GDDR7 memory on a 512-bit bus, and boost clocks up to 2775 MHz when tuned through MSI Center.

While MSI hasn’t published formal benchmark results for this card yet, the engineering focus is clearly on overclocking and record-breaking performance. Early internal and third-party reports show this card performing at the top of overclocking charts, and MSI’s own promotional materials highlight its benchmark prowess.

Connectivity and Features

Display outputs on the LIGHTNING Z include three DisplayPort 2.1b ports and one HDMI 2.1b port, and an additional USB-C port is dedicated solely to the integrated display panel, not for video output to external monitors.

This means you can use most modern display configurations normally while reserving that USB-C connection for powering and communicating with the on-card panel.

Early Impressions

The MSI GeForce RTX 5090 32G LIGHTNING Z is one of the most ambitious graphics cards we’ve seen in the modern era. It is not targeted at average gamers or even typical enthusiasts. Instead, it is built for users who want peak overclocking potential, exotic hardware features like integrated displays, and the opportunity to own something truly limited and collectible.

With dual BIOS profiles, a dedicated liquid cooler, premium build touches, and a suite of accessories designed to support customization and extreme tuning, the LIGHTNING Z commands attention right out of the box.

For now, we are still waiting on the official local availability and pricing in Malaysia, but with only 1,300 units globally and such high engineering ambition, it will almost certainly be a headline piece in any enthusiast’s build.
