RTX 4070 vs. 4070 Super: Is the Upgrade Worth It?

The NVIDIA RTX 4070 SUPER has been around for almost a year now since its announcement during CES 2024 keynote. While the RTX 4070 SUPER is not meant to replace the RTX 4070 as NVIDIA has adjusted the base model to fit into a lower price range category. Nonetheless, both cards are capable of delivering remarkable gaming experiences, but which one is the better choice for your needs? Today, we will revisit these two GPUs and find out the answer.

Performance and Gaming Experience

On average, the RTX 4070 SUPER will be providing about 15% of performance increment over the RTX 4070. The gap is more apparent in Time Spy benchmark suite that was built from the ground up to support DirectX 12 and API features like asynchronous compute, explicit multi-adapter, and multi-threading.

This should set a rough estimation on how you can expect from this comparison.

The RTX 4070 SUPER outperforms the RTX 4070 by about 12% in both 1440p and 1080p. Even at the highest graphical settings, the RTX 4070 SUPER is capable of providing over 100 fps gaming experience. Overall, I think both cards are performing similarly well, while the SUPER offers much more headroom.

Switching our focus to the Cyberpunk 2077 with the highest graphical settings – Ray Tracing OVERDRIVE. We are seeing the similar pattern of performance advantage with an exceptional performance boost when Frame Generation technology is enabled. The most logical explanation here is the huge leap in the Tensor core count that contributes to the Frame Generation performance.

That goes without saying, the RTX 4070 SUPER offers a noticeable frame rate increase over the base RTX 4070. With just 10% additional power consumption, you’re getting more than 10% performance increment out of the card. At times it could even surpass 15%.

Price and Value

Conclusion

The RTX 4070 SUPER is a better choice for gamers who prioritize high performance and ray tracing capabilities. Especially triple-A titles at 1440p resolution, which it could deliver stunning visuals and high frame rates. While the RTX 4070 is still a capable card for the task, you can’t help but to notice the slightly older GPU is falling back which is why they had to revise the price at the time of the introduction of the SUPER cards.

The choice between the RTX 4070 SUPER and RTX 4070 ultimately depends on your specific gaming needs and budget. If you prioritize high frame rates, demanding games, and overall a better performance card, the RTX 4070 SUPER is the way to go. However, if you’re on a budget, the 4070 can still provide good performance at a lower cost. Especially if there are clearance sales that drops the price even further, that would bring even more value to the table.

Consider these factors when making your decision:

• Gaming resolution: If you play at 1440p, the RTX 4070 SUPER is an excellent option. Otherwise, 1080p should not be an issue for either cards, and you might save some money for going for the RTX 4070 option.
• Performance headroom: If you want a GPU that can handle future games at higher settings, the RTX 4070 SUPER might be a better investment.
