Perplexity just made its agentic AI a lot more accessible for Windows users, bringing Portable Computer to any PC running compatible NVIDIA GeForce RTX or RTX PRO GPUs. It’s essentially a local version of Perplexity Computer, the company’s agent built to plan and carry out multi-step tasks, except now it can run entirely on-device, keeping sensitive files off the cloud while still tapping into more powerful cloud models when a task genuinely needs it.

Since everything’s local, absolute privacy is guaranteed by default, yet the capabilities of AI through Portable Computer is still powerful, as it utilizes local models accelerated by NVIDIA GPUs to analyze data, pull information together across files, and handle recurring work, and none of that locally completed work eats into your Perplexity Computer credits. If a task does call for heavier reasoning, the agent recognizes that and asks for your permission before sending anything off-device to the cloud, so you’re always in the loop about what’s actually leaving your machine.
The app comes with a local model, Qwen 3.8 27B, that’s been specifically post-trained to work with Perplexity Computer and optimized for NVIDIA RTX hardware, so you don’t need to go hunting for the right model or wrestle with a complicated local AI setup yourself. Connectors for tools like Microsoft Outlook, OneDrive, Word, Google Drive, Gmail, Slack, and GitHub also plug the agent directly into the apps people already use daily.
In practice, that opens up some pretty specific use cases. Engineers can have it review open pull requests in a connected GitHub project, sort them by status, and flag outdated documentation for updates. On the finance side, it can dig through years of brokerage summaries and tax documents to trace which recurring holdings are quietly costing the most in fees or tax drag, citing the exact file and page for every figure, all without any of that sensitive data ever touching a chatbot. Startups could use it to analyze a funnel export locally, figure out exactly where signups are dropping off, and post the key findings straight to a team Slack channel.
Portable Computer is available now for NVIDIA GeForce RTX and RTX PRO GPUs with 24GB or more of VRAM, with support for NVIDIA DGX Station systems expected to follow soon.
