Yeah yeah, the closed ecosystem of Apple definitely makes it seamless and convenient for its own devices to share files and stay connected at all times. But it’s kind of a joke when it comes to the amount of effort you need to put in in order to have your Windows PC support, let’s say, your iPhone. But not today – Microsoft is now making it smoother via the latest update to the Phone Link app.
But that’s only half the story because the Link to Windows app for iPhone is also required but with both equipped, then you can just simply transfer files with the most straightforward forward up to this day.
Here’s how you can do it.
- Find your file within your iPhone and tap Share
- Select Link to Windows, then find your PC’s device name
Or vice versa, this is how you send from Windows PC to your iPhone
- Right-click your file on your Windows PC,
- Select Share, then choose My Phone
This is one of the freshest ways to support cross-platform although this doesn’t seem to stem directly from Apple itself but rather Microsoft’s extra effort in making sure its users skip other tools like Google Drive or Dropbox for file movement. Combining this with August’s Windows-Android file transfer support, one can enjoy seamless file transfer no matter what sort of modern device one is running.
Also, just a quick “requirements check” to make sure you’re up to speed on whatever version your devices are using.
- Phone Link version 1.24112.89.0 or later
- Link to Windows version 1.24112.73 or later
- An iPhone running iOS 16 or newer
- A PC with Windows 10 or Windows 11
- Enrollment in the Windows Insider Program
Yes, that last bit is a bit of a bummer since it’s not globally available but rather limited to Windows Insider users, it’s gonna come sooner or later so let’s just wait for a “random” Windows update that somehow enabled that feature for most people.
