US-based ION Storage Systems has announced that they have achieved customer qualification for the performance of its Cornerstone solid-state battery cells, and yes, that’s the first ever American-based SSB technology company to reach this stage.
This comes shortly after the company announced it had begun shipping sample cells to several major players across industrial, consumer electronics, and automotive sectors, suggesting that its technology is already being evaluated in real-world scenarios.
CEO Jorge Diaz Schneider expresses excitement regarding this milestone, as the new technology it helped unlock, will be able to help partners innovate without being limited by traditional lithium-ion battery designs.
From a technical perspective, CTO Dr. Greg Hitz described the transition from lab prototype to practical application as a company-defining achievement, and they will be focusing on delivering a full solution tailored to customer needs. He also highlighted the battery’s unique characteristics, particularly its combination of high-temperature stability and performance traits, which he believes set it apart from other options currently available in the battery market.
Interestingly, ION is also taking a slightly different commercialization route compared to many other battery startups. Rather than targeting electric vehicles right away, Diaz Schneider said the company is focusing first on applications where its technology can deliver immediate value. He pointed out that this mirrors the historical path of lithium batteries, which initially gained traction in smaller, high-value devices before eventually scaling into larger industries.
To support early demand, production will begin at ION’s facility in Beltsville, Maryland, which is currently being expanded. The company expects manufacturing to start in 2026, aided by the installation of a new sintering furnace.
