Unlike rival Team Green, which likes to gatekeep the latest AI-powered GPU features behind the latest GPU hardware, AMD is doing quite the opposite by essentially bringing FSR 4 support to older cards, if the news is true to its rumor.

AMD FSR 4

Following an OC3D post citing an AMD insider, this individual has stated that Team Red is currently developing support for FidelityFX Super Resolution 4, or FSR 4, for RDNA-3 GPUs, a.k.a Radeon RX 7000 series GPUs. At the current state, FSR 4 is for Radeon RX 9000 cards powered by the RDNA 4 architecture that comes with better AI hardware to run the upscaling technology.

Despite what one may think that “only the latest hardware gets to pair with the latest software”, certainly not for AMD, as they reportedly work on expanding compatibility to previous-generation hardware.

AMD Radeon RX 9000 Series Announce (2)

Sure, NVIDIA DLSS is advancedly mature and being adopted by thousands of titles, developers, and studios, while AMD FSR continues to trail behind it. But at least FSR is open for all to use, with FSR 4 promising even better image quality through AI-based upscaling. And if Radeon RX 7000 series GPUs get to use it, it could honestly boost the value of the already affordable series due to it being a generation behind, assuming devs are including it in their games.

However, technical challenges remain, particularly around achieving acceptable performance levels on GPUs with lower AI throughput. But if they really made it to further prove the point of “AI being used to allow better gaming experience at a cheaper price”, that’s a really big chad move from AMD that benefits not only its reputation but also for the broader PC gaming community.

Additionally, reports have suggested that there will be busting new FSR 4-related news in terms of partnership and/or hardware-related announcements, such as the Radeon RX 9060 XT at COMPUTEX 2025.
