NEXTDC, which is based in Australia has officially expanded into Malaysia, as they recently celebrated lighting up the KL1 data center that is in, yep, Kuala Lumpur.

The company is essentially setting up a regional foothold to support the surge in AI, cloud, and digital services across Southeast Asia, backed by a long-term investment of about RM2.8 billion. Sitting within the Klang Valley, it is designed from the ground up for AI and high-performance computing workloads – 65MW of power capacity built around Tier IV design principles, with the goal of becoming the first Uptime Institute Tier IV-certified data centre in Peninsular Malaysia.
This also brings in ecosystem-led models into Southeast Asia to help clients get access to a broader network of cloud providers, carriers, and tech partners. That’s a big deal for companies expanding into the region because it removes a lot of the friction around connectivity and infrastructure setup.

From Malaysia’s perspective, this lines up with a much bigger national push. Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo framed KL1 as part of the country’s ambition to become a leading digital and AI hub in Southeast Asia, especially under initiatives like AI Nation 2030, while Selangor Chief Minister Amirudin Shari highlighted how quickly the project moved from groundbreaking in 2023 to completion, positioning Petaling Jaya as a new node in the global AI ecosystem.
In broader geopolitical terms, the backing from Australia via the Southeast Asia Economic Strategy further strengthens the digital corridor between it and Asia, giving companies a trusted infrastructure partner, driving future investments and relevant industries, and building local talent through various partnerships.
