While most of us is having our attention on the newly launched GeForce RTX 2060, the somewhat forgotten / denied GTX 11 series rumor is making its come back. It was reported on Hardwareluxx.de just few hours ago with a link to GFXBench result that clearly shows the name of the graphics card used – GTX 1180.

Based on the screenshots above, you can see that the while it shows GTX 1180 as the name of the device, the rendered is showing something different – GeForce RTX 2080/PCIe/SSE2. Due to this, we can’t really tell if it’s really legit.

To further look into this, here’s a comparison between the alleged GTX 1180 and RTX 2080 on GFXBench compare. The result shows a striking similar performance between both cards:

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1180 GFXBench (5)

As the software recognizes the card as a GTX 1180 instead of RTX 2080, it’s possible that the result was submitted using a RTX 2080 with a modded BIOS. Such feat can be performed using a custom modded BIOS with the information of the GPU model modified, just like how the fake GPUs that flooded eBay, Amazon, etc are ‘made’.

Though, if we were to make any wild guesses on the existence of the GTX 1180, here’s what it might turn out to be – the driver for RTX 2080 is compatible with GTX 1180, which means that it’s actually based on the same Turing GPU but without the RT cores for real-time ray tracing.

Do keep in mind that these are the speculations at this stage, so take the information above with a grain of salt for now.
