Malaysia’s Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, led by YB Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani, has visited Micron’s Penang facility located in Batu Kawan last week, with the visit centered on the company’s production of SOCAMM2, a memory solution built to support the growing demands of next-generation AI infrastructure.

As AI workloads become more sophisticated and data-heavy, demand is rising for memory that offers both high capacity and energy efficiency. SOCAMM2, manufactured in Malaysia and already deployed in leading AI platforms, is designed to meet that need, and its production reflects the advanced assembly, packaging, and testing capabilities that have developed within Malaysia’s semiconductor industry.
Micron’s Malaysian operations, spanning Penang and Johor, play a significant role in the company’s broader global manufacturing and supply chain, supporting assembly and testing for cutting-edge memory and storage products. Through items like SOCAMM2 modules and high-capacity SSDs, Micron says its Malaysian operations help drive innovation in AI and high-performance computing while strengthening the country’s position in the global semiconductor industry.
Specifically for SOCAMM2, Micron is first one to produce 256GB LPDRAM memory module for AI data centers, and through the high-capacity, low-power memory characteristics, this can address bottlenecks in large-scale AI workloads such as long-context inference. Where high-bandwidth memory serves GPU compute, SOCAMM2 plays a similar role for CPUs, letting them manage large memory footprints efficiently, with the two working together to support next-generation AI infrastructure performance. The module is already integral to NVIDIA’s Vera Rubin platform, addressing CPU memory bottlenecks in large AI systems.
On the sustainability side, Micron’s fully renewable electricity operations, supported by its CGPP solar project and LEED Platinum certification, are becoming an increasingly relevant factor for hyperscalers seeking carbon-neutral supply chains, adding to the competitive case around SOCAMM2’s production origin. Workforce capability rounds out the picture, with Micron ranked #2 in Great Place to Work Malaysia and continuing to invest in AI upskilling, university partnerships, and talent development aimed at keeping the country’s semiconductor workforce ready for next-generation manufacturing needs.
