While the strongest consumer-grade GPU is none other than the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090, its VRAM is based on the GDDR6X technology but if that’s not “future-proof” enough for you, then the next-gen graphics card might just reach the horizon thanks to Micron announcing the sampling of GDDR7 memory chip.

To start, the overall throughput is up 33% at maximum while response time for gen-AI workloads is down as much as 20% while gaming performance is going to net 30% FPS in ray-tracing as well as rasterizing tasks across all mainstream resolutions of FHD, QHD, and UHD. With this, Micron is essentially covering the entire AI market of CPU, NPU, and GPU with DDR, PLDDR, and GDDR to date.

The achievement is done using icron’s 1β (1-beta) DRAM technology and innovative architecture that leads to more than 1.5 TB/s of system bandwidth on top of the over +50% power efficiency over GDDR6. It even has a new “Sleep Mode” that cuts standby power by up to 70% while the advanced reliability, availability, and serviceability (RAS) features ensure device dependability and data integrity without compromising performance.

Partners of Micron like AMD and Cadence are also looking forward to this tech to bring the next level of unprecedented efficiency, performance, and generational improvement towards its products and offerings.


Micron revealed a 2H 2024 global release for select global channel distributors and resellers but one may also talk directly to them for acquiring stocks of the GDDR7 memory chip.
