Upgrade & Installation Experience

In our circumstances, we have a laptop with a 500GB drive and we are going to upgrade it to the ADATA LEGEND 860 1TB.
Upgrading your system’s storage is straightforward, but it would take some extra steps if you wish to clone your existing system to the new drive without starting afresh. Here is a step-by-step walk-through of the disk cloning and upgrading process.
Step 1 Back Up Your Data: The most important step of all – BACKUP ALL YOUR FILES. If anything goes wrong with the upgrade, you won’t be panicking looking for data recovery services.
Step 2 Prepare Tools: Ensure you have the following tools:
- a precision screwdriver kit and a plastic prying tool ready.
- USB M.2 SSD enclosure kit. You will need to clone the data from old drive to new drive.

We have mounted the ADATA LEGEND 860 in the USB M.2 enclosure and then plug into the laptop.

Step 3 Clone / Migrate Your Data: Rather than starting with a clean OS installation, you can clone your existing 500GB drive to the 1TB LEGEND 860.

We are using the ADATA SSD Toolbox. Download and install on your system.

This is a handy tool that also provides a slew of useful features such as disk diagnostic scan and firmware updates.

The CloneDrive tab provides a straightforward interface to clone your SSD. This transfers your operating system, software, and files intact.

The cloning process took about 40 minutes to complete. Depending on your partition size, your time may vary.

Step 4 Physical Installation:
- Power down the device fully and disconnect the charger.
- Remove the bottom panel screws and carefully pop off the rear cover using a prying tool.
- Disconnect the battery to prevent electrical short-circuits.
- Unbolt the original M.2 drive and remove it from its slot.
- Insert the ADATA LEGEND 860 1TB, secure it with the retaining screw, and reconnect the battery.

Step 5 Reassemble & Boot Up: Snap the back cover back into place, replace the screws, and power on the system. If you cloned the drive, your system will boot straight into your familiar OS with expanded storage space immediately available.
Real-World Usage
- Boot Times: System startup is fast and responsive, taking under 10 seconds to hit the desktop.
- Game Loading & App Launches: Heavy applications like Adobe Premiere Pro and large-scale titles load without noticeable delays.
- File Transfers: Copying a 40GB media folder locally completed in under 12 seconds, maintaining consistent write speeds throughout the transfer.
Why Upgrade to the LEGEND 860?
- Doubling Your Storage Headroom: Moving from 500GB to 1TB eliminates storage anxiety, allowing you to install larger software suites and keep modern AAA games installed without constantly managing disk space.
- Cost-to-Performance Ratio: As a drive designed for budget-oriented customers, the LEGEND 860 delivers Gen4 speed capabilities at a highly competitive price point.
- Cool & Efficient Operation: During extended write tests, temperatures remained well within thermal limits without aggressive throttling, making it an ideal candidate for slim notebooks where internal airflow is tight.
Pros & Cons
Pros:
- Excellent value proposition for budget-conscious buyers
- PCIe Gen4 speeds (up to 6,000 MB/s read) deliver responsive performance
