GTA VI is coming. Half of the world will somehow “stop functioning” at launch day, and the hype continues to spread beyond just the gaming world, as multiple scam campaigns have been spotted that trick eager fans into handing over their personal information, payment details, or even downloading malware disguised as the highly anticipated game.
According to Kaspersky’s report, fake pre-order sites that closely resemble official PlayStation or game retailer pages are among the most common, since it is quick and easy to set up. Once users attempt to pre-order the game, they are asked to provide personal details and payment information, but instead of receiving a copy of GTA VI, victims risk losing money while exposing sensitive financial and personal data to attackers. These sites often integrate multilingual options too, suggesting that scammers knew how much influence GTA VI has on the public, and, in certain respects, integrating language switch lists also makes the fake site seem more legit.
Meanwhile, websites claiming to offer leaked beta versions of GTA VI for download also showed up too – Ah, the classic. Here, loads of fake comments claiming the download is genuine will be posted. For cryptocurrency-related moves, suspicious websites promoting fake tokens using names and branding similar to GTA VI somehow got involved in some actions too.
At the time of writing, the game will only have console versions during the official release. So either you get the game through the online PS Store for the PS5 family, or the Xbox site if you’re rocking Xbox Series X|S. Don’t even trust “CD Key” sites at this point.
