With the transition to Intel’s latest LGA1851 platform, motherboard vendors are starting to explore different ways to extract more performance beyond just CPU tuning. Memory optimization, in particular, has become a key area of focus, especially with DDR5 scaling continuing to improve.

The Gigabyte Z890 AORUS Elite Duo X is one of the more interesting implementations we’ve seen so far. Instead of going with the conventional 4-DIMM layout, Gigabyte opted for a 2-DIMM design, with the intention of pushing memory frequency and stability further than what typical boards can achieve.

At a glance, it still looks like part of the usual AORUS Elite lineup. But once you start working with the board, it becomes clear that this is a much more focused product than its naming might suggest.

Design & Layout

In terms of overall design, the Z890 AORUS Elite Duo X follows the familiar AORUS styling. A mostly black PCB, large heatsinks across the VRM and M.2 areas, and a relatively clean layout without excessive visual elements.

The defining difference here is the memory configuration. With only two DIMM slots placed closer to the CPU, trace length is reduced, which improves signal integrity and reduces noise. This is a well-known approach for high-frequency memory tuning, but it is usually reserved for more specialised boards.

Gigabyte’s Duo X implementation is essentially built around this idea. The goal is not just to hit higher peak memory speeds, but to improve stability and consistency when running at those speeds.

The trade-off is fairly straightforward. You lose the flexibility of a 4-DIMM layout, which may matter depending on your usage, even though higher-density DDR5 modules can still provide sufficient total capacity.

Features & Connectivity

Feature-wise, the board covers most of what you would expect from a Z890 motherboard in this segment.

You’re getting support for Intel Core Ultra processors on LGA1851, along with high-speed DDR5 memory support that goes well beyond standard specifications. Storage options are also adequate, with multiple M.2 slots and proper heatsink coverage.

At the back, you’ll find networking options such as 5GbE LAN and Wi-Fi 7, which is becoming increasingly common at this level. USB connectivity is sufficient, including USB4 support, although the rear I/O does not particularly stand out compared to some alternatives.

Overall, the feature set is balanced, but it is clear that the primary focus here is still memory performance rather than maximising connectivity.

VRM & Power Delivery

Gigabyte equips the Z890 AORUS Elite Duo X with a 16+1+2 phase VRM design using 60A power stages, which is more than adequate for current Core Ultra processors.

In actual usage, power delivery remains stable under sustained loads, and VRM temperatures are kept under control with the provided cooling solution. There are no obvious limitations here for typical usage or moderate tuning.

This is not positioned as an extreme overclocking board for CPU, but it provides enough headroom to support the platform without issue.

BIOS Experience

One area that sees a noticeable improvement on this board is the BIOS.

Compared to previous AORUS boards, the interface is significantly easier to navigate. Options are better organised, and finding specific settings does not feel as cumbersome as before.

The transition between Easy Mode and Advanced Mode is also much more seamless now. It feels more refined overall, especially when you’re moving in and out of different sections while tuning.

For users who spend time adjusting memory or system parameters, this makes a difference. It reduces the friction of navigating the BIOS and makes the overall tuning process more straightforward.

Memory Performance & Tuning

While Gigabyte advertises support for extremely high DDR5 frequencies exceeding DDR5-10000, we didn’t have the necessary hardware to reach that benchmark – the DDR5 memory kits we have can only go as far as DDR5-8600. However, what stood out was not the peak frequency, but how the board behaves across more realistic configurations.

In general, DDR5-7200 and DDR5-8000 kits boot much more easily on this board compared to typical 4-DIMM designs. Memory training is more consistent, and achieving stable configurations requires less effort.

More interestingly, a number of our existing DDR5-6000 kits were able to scale up to DDR5-8000, with some even reaching DDR5-8266 with relatively less tuning than expected.

This is where the 2-DIMM layout shows its advantage. It is not just about hitting extreme numbers, but making higher memory speeds more accessible and stable across a wider range of kits.

That said, the actual performance gains will still depend on the workload. While there are measurable improvements in certain scenarios, the impact on gaming remains relatively modest beyond a certain point.

Thermal Behaviour

While the readings on HWInfo64 are somewhat off, we didn’t encounter any issues throughout the test. We’ve checked the temperatures around the VRM, M.2 SSD, and the motherboard chipset using a thermal imaging camera to make sure everything is alright.

The VRM cooling solution is sufficient for sustained workloads, and the M.2 heatsinks help maintain stable SSD temperatures. There are no obvious thermal issues observed during testing.

As usual, overall system thermals will still depend on airflow and component choices, but the board itself does not introduce any concerns as per our test.

Final Thoughts

The Gigabyte Z890 AORUS Elite Duo X is not a typical mid-range motherboard.

While it carries the Elite branding, the design choices place it closer to a niche category focused on memory performance. The 2-DIMM layout, combined with improved signal integrity, makes higher DDR5 speeds easier to achieve and more stable in general use.

The improvements to the BIOS also play a role here, making the tuning process smoother and more accessible compared to previous generations.

If you’re specifically looking for a 2-DIMM ATX board from AORUS, similar in concept to the world-record breaking Tachyon but without going into that price range, this is one option that makes sense. It delivers a good portion of that memory-focused behaviour in a more accessible package.

For general users, however, the benefits may not always justify the trade-offs. The reduced DIMM count and the relatively limited real-world gains in certain workloads mean that a standard 4-DIMM board may still be the more practical choice.
