The BenQ GV30 is finally available in Malaysia and I have been fortunate to try it out for the past few weeks. If you’re in the market looking for a portable projector, you might be interested in this little cleverly designed projector. Let’s find out more.

Brilliant Design

First of all, we have to address the BenQ GV30’s design. There is a reason why this projector is made into a wheel shape. For those of you who have tried to project to the ceiling, you will definitely know the pain of trying to position the projector in place without having it tumbling down. That is simply because our usual projectors are meant to project to the wall instead of the ceiling.

The GV30’s wheel shape combined with the magnetic base allows the user to freely adjust the projector up to 135 degrees. You can quickly turn it from the wall to the ceiling.

With the help of built-in auto-keystone and autofocus feature, even first-time users will have no trouble setting up the GV30 for a movie night.

The ports are located at the side so they won’t get in the way no matter what orientation the projector is in. The USB-C port also supports USB-PD charging so you can actually prolong the battery life of the projector with a compatible power bank. Speaking of the battery life, a single full charge of the internal 4800mAh battery will last you for about 2 and a half hours of movie playback.

Google-Certified Android TV

The BenQ GV30 runs on the Android TV platform. I believe most of the users who are used to smart TVs will know how to navigate around the UI without any trouble.

It has a fast boot-up time and supports the official Android TV store so you can download most of the available streaming services to the projector. My personal favourite being the YouTube, Plex and Amazon Prime.

One thing to take note of is that Netflix is only available through Aptoide TV. You can learn more about it here.

Colour-Accurate & High Contrast Projection

Even though our common sense tells us that portable projectors usually have pretty bad video quality due to the miniaturised components, however, BenQ manage to surprise us with an excellent projection quality. I did not expect a projector to do so well in accurate colour reproduction and sharp contrast between bright and dark spots.

Some may expect a 1080p Full HD resolution projection instead of a 720p HD resolution, but I think it is a fair compromise as the cost may go up significantly which defeats the purpose of an affordable portable projector. Besides, it can easily project up to an 80-inch screen from 2.1 meters away. In other words, balancing between the projection quality and resolution is the right way to go.

Built-in 2.1 Sound System

Other than the video quality, BenQ also emphasises the audio quality for the GV30. This is probably the first-ever portable projector with a built-in 2.1 sound system. Yes, they have gone and done it. Powered by treVolo, BenQ’s audio division stuffed in a package of 16W (4W+4W Speakers and 8W woofer) into the GV30’s chassis. Due to the additional subwoofer driver, the audio is richer and full of emotion instead of the usual treble-heavy sound profile found on any regular portable projectors. I can safely say this is the projector you don’t need to get additional speakers for it. Besides, you can also use the GV30 as a standalone Bluetooth speaker by pairing it with your music player.

BenQ GV30: Who is this for?

At the end of the day, some might ask, who is this for? I’d say, this projector is suitable for those who are looking for a portable projector without sacrificing the audio and visual experience.

It even comes with a hardshell case that fits not just the projector, but also the magnetic base, charger and even additional cables. Basically, it is an all-in-one portable projector solution.
