It took some of the fans by surprise when ASUS announced the ROG THOR 1200W 80 PLUS Platinum certified power supply last year at Computex 2018. As the first power supply in the ROG lineup, ASUS packs the ROG THOR with features that are aimed directly at the enthusiasts – 80 Plus Platinum certification, 10 years warranty, fully modular cables, etc. We managed to get our unit directly from ASUS Malaysia this time, so let’s see just what kind of built quality and features can we expect from the ROG THOR 1200W.

Unboxing

ASUS ROG Thor 1200W Platinum (2)

Packaging wise, you’ll be seeing the familiar looking black-red accent box for the ROG THOR 1200W. At the front of the box, you’ll find an image of the product itself and some information of the power supply i.e ASUS AURA SYNC support, 80 PLUS Platinum certification and the 10-year warranty from ASUS.

At the back of the box, you’ll find more information on what other features does the ROG THOR 1200W have. Among these highlighted features, the ROG heatsink is what interests us the most. That’s something you can only see by taking the power supply apart, which we don’t recommend doing so.

Here’s something you don’t normally see – the power supply and its accessories are kept in two different compartment. Inside the bigger box, you’ll find the ROG THOR sandwiched in between two pieces of thick foam for extra protection. The smaller box contains the modular cables, power cord, user manual and cable combs.

Not all of the cables are individually sleeved, just so you know. The cables that comes individually sleeved are the 24-pin ATX power connector, four 6+2-pin PCIe power connector and two 8-pin EPS power connector.

The ROG THOR 1200W

The ROG THOR 1200W are basically a  Seasonic PRIME power supply modified to fit the ROG theme. Especially for the integrated watt meter that is not available on any of the original PRIME series. This is a good addition to an enthusiast grade power supply, but there’s a limitation when it comes to the choice of PC case due to the orientation of the design. If you’re used to installing a power supply with its fan facing the bottom, the integrated watt meter will not be visible.

As Seasonic is the OEM behind this power supply, it’s no surprise if the power output layout looks familiar to Seasonic power supply owners. The extra socket located on the bottom left allows you to connect the ROG THOR to your ASUS motherboard for the AURA SYNC RGB lighting.

Unlike most power supply we’ve seen to date, ASUS are actually using a customized fan grill with a touch of ROG. You can see the ROG eye logo on the Aluminum fan grill which we initially though it was made of plastic – we were wrong. Though, LED lighting on the edge with the word ‘THOR’ is a bit wobbly.

Under than fan grill, you’ll find an insane amount of heatsink with ROG label that helps to cool down the power supply during operation. As how much does it helps with the overall operation, we will talk more about that later in the test.

User Experience

We’ve tested the power supply using our main test system with the ROG Maximus X Apex paired with a RTX 2080 Ti, RTX 2080 to see how much we can draw from the power supply. Just so you know, the fan barely spins at all if we’re doing any test that uses only a single RTX 2080 Ti or RTX 2080.

So, by running a series of stress test that involves heavy calculations using our GPU, our test system is drawing an average of 820W. That’s basically just 68% of what the ROG THOR 1200W can deliver but that’s what our test system can draw at most. Needless to say, the ROG THOR 1200W can handle our system very well as no noticeable hiccups or instability on our system throughout the test.

For enthusiasts grade power supply nowadays, you’ll notice the cooling fan will start to kick in only when additional cooling is required. At approximately 50% power draw or 600W, the cooling fan barely spins. We ran a quick scan on the power supply with an IR temperature gun and the temperature recorded is only at around 40°C. This shows that these heatsink are actually doing its job well in cooling down the power supply during operation.

Since our total power draw isn’t going anywhere higher than 70%, enabling the 0db fan option doesn’t really affect the test. The watt meter still show you the system power draw at 820W range even after running the same set of stress test with 0db fan enabled for 6 hours. The recorded temperature via IR temperature gun for 820W load still remains pretty low, which is at around 42°C only.

Final Thoughts

There’s nothing much to brag about the fully modular design and 80 Plus Platinum certification because you’ll find a lot more similar power supply in the market. Though, things can hardly go wrong with Seasonic as the OEM behind the ROG THOR 1200W. As mentioned earlier, the ROG THOR 1200W is actually based on the PRIME series power supplies, one of Seasonic’s best but with an extra touch on the aesthetics.

Even after running our test system at 820W load for 6 hours, the power supply still runs cool at 42°C and there’s no noticeable hiccups throughout the test. With very minimal power being converted and wasted in the form of heat, this shows just how efficient the power supply is.

Looking at what the ROG THOR 1200W offers in terms of build quality, aesthetics and features, we wouldn’t mind recommending the power supply to the enthusiasts or the ROG fans albeit the price is on the higher side.
