Memory support is equally impressive, with four DDR5 DIMM slots supporting speeds of up to DDR5-9066+ (OC support depending on kit and IMC capability). ASUS continues to include its memory optimisation technologies such as DIMM Flex, DIMM Fit, and AEMP III, providing additional tuning flexibility and compatibility improvements for enthusiasts.

Along the motherboard’s edge, ASUS provides a comprehensive set of headers for modern PC builds. This includes a front-panel USB 20Gbps Type-C header, support for USB-C Power Delivery up to 30W, multiple PWM fan headers, AIO pump support, as well as ARGB and RGB headers for lighting and cooling configurations.

Builders planning a showcase system with multiple RGB components and complex cooling setups will find more than enough connectivity options here.

Moving down to the expansion area, the primary PCIe slot operates at PCIe 5.0 x16 speeds and features ASUS SafeSlot reinforcement to better support today’s increasingly heavy graphics cards.

One of the more practical additions here is PCIe Slot Q-Release Slim. Removing large graphics cards can sometimes be inconvenient, especially in tighter cases or when using large CPU coolers, and this mechanism significantly simplifies the process.

Storage expansion is another area where ASUS clearly did not make compromises.

The motherboard features a total of five M.2 slots, with the primary slot supporting PCIe 5.0 x4 SSDs while the remaining slots support PCIe 4.0 drives. Four SATA ports are also available for users who still rely on traditional storage devices.

The entire M.2 section is covered by large aluminium heatsinks, helping maintain SSD temperatures during sustained workloads and heavy file transfers. ASUS also integrates M.2 Q-Release and M.2 Q-Latch mechanisms, eliminating the need for tiny screws when installing or replacing SSDs.

These improvements may seem minor individually, but they make the overall building experience noticeably smoother.

Rear I/O Connectivity

The rear I/O configuration is one of the stronger aspects of the ROG STRIX Z890-A GAMING WIFI.

The board features dual Thunderbolt 4 Type-C ports capable of delivering up to 40Gbps bandwidth, making it suitable for high-speed external storage, docking solutions, and professional peripherals.

In addition, users will find multiple USB 10Gbps and USB 5Gbps ports, ensuring a healthy range of connectivity options for everyday devices.

Networking is handled by Intel’s 2.5Gb Ethernet controller alongside WiFi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4 support. With WiFi 7 adoption gradually increasing across routers and ecosystems, this ensures the platform remains relevant for future upgrades.

Display outputs include HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 1.4, useful for systems running integrated graphics or for troubleshooting purposes.

ASUS also includes dedicated BIOS FlashBack and Clear CMOS buttons on the rear I/O panel, which are especially useful for BIOS recovery and system troubleshooting without requiring a supported CPU or memory configuration.

Audio is powered by ROG SupremeFX based on the Realtek ALC4080 codec. For most users, onboard audio performance is more than sufficient for gaming, media playback, and general daily use.

The motherboard also supports ASUS-exclusive features such as AI Advisor, AI Cooling II, and many more. These tools are designed to simplify system optimisation and help users take advantage of Intel’s AI-focused Core Ultra platform without requiring extensive manual tuning.

Memory Performance & Tuning

As the Z890 chipset motherboards are meant for enthusiasts who want more performance out of their CPU and memory, you can expect the ROG STRIX Z890-A GAMING WIFI to offer something reasonable compared to the mainstream B860 chipset motherboards.

ROG Strix Z890 A Gaming WiFi DDR5 Test

ASUS officially lists DDR5 support beyond DDR5-9066+ (OC support depending on configuration), although our current test setup does not reach that level. With the available memory kits and CPU on hand, we were able to achieve up to DDR5-8600 at most. However, peak frequency is not the main focus here, but rather how the motherboard behaves under more realistic configurations.

DDR5-7200 and DDR5-8000 memory kits generally booted without issues on the ROG STRIX Z890-A GAMING WIFI. Memory training times are typical for the platform, and both XMP profiles tested were stable without requiring additional manual tuning.

Even with DDR5-6000 kits, you can still go quite far ahead with the ROG STRIX Z890-A GAMING WIFI – just make sure they’re Hynix A-die or M-die. Several of our DDR5-6000 kits were able to scale up to DDR5-8000 with relative stability, and in a few cases, we were able to push them further to around DDR5-8266 with additional tuning effort.

Thermal Behaviour

ROG Strix Z890 A Gaming WiFi Temps

During testing, sensor readings reported via HWInfo64 did not fully align with our observations, so we relied on thermal imaging to obtain a more accurate view of the motherboard’s operating temperatures. We specifically examined key areas including the VRM zone, M.2 SSD heatsinks, and the chipset area to ensure there were no hidden thermal concerns.

From our observations, the VRM cooling solution is more than capable of handling sustained workloads. Even under extended stress, temperatures remained within a comfortable range, indicating that ASUS has not compromised on heatsink design or overall power delivery cooling.

The M.2 heatsinks also perform well, keeping SSD temperatures stable during prolonged read and write workloads. There were no signs of aggressive thermal buildup or throttling during testing, even with high-performance PCIe 5.0 storage.

As with any system, overall thermals will still depend heavily on case airflow, fan configuration, and component selection. However, based on our observations, the ROG STRIX Z890-A GAMING WIFI itself does not introduce any thermal concerns in a properly configured build.

Final Thoughts

While it’s not as feature-rich and convenient as the higher-end ROG motherboards, the ASUS ROG STRIX Z890-A GAMING WIFI is still a well-rounded motherboard that successfully combines premium aesthetics with a comprehensive feature set.

Its clean white design will undoubtedly appeal to users building white-themed systems, but the board offers much more than visual appeal alone. Strong power delivery, extensive storage support, modern connectivity options, WiFi 7, Thunderbolt 4, and ASUS’ growing collection of DIY-friendly features all contribute to a polished and complete package.

What stands out most is that ASUS has focused not only on specifications, but also on improving the overall building and ownership experience. Features such as PCIe Slot Q-Release Slim, M.2 Q-Latch, M.2 Q-Release, BIOS FlashBack, and WiFi Q-Antenna show a clear understanding of the challenges PC builders often face during assembly and upgrades.

With a retail price of RM2,240, the ROG STRIX Z890-A GAMING WIFI is undeniably a premium offering. However, beyond its clean white aesthetics, the motherboard also delivers a feature-rich platform complete with WiFi 7, Thunderbolt 4, PCIe 5.0 support, five M.2 slots, and ASUS’ growing collection of builder-friendly features such as PCIe Slot Q-Release Slim and M.2 Q-Latch.
