TARUC Kota Kinabalu 1 on 1 Dota 2 Tournament

By: Clement Thien

It is certainly a norm that we have Dota2 tournaments these days, but in Malaysia, most of them are happening in the Peninsular. This time around, we chanced upon one tournament in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. Yup the Land Below The Wind, organized by the students of the Department of Computer Science and Mathematics of Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TARUC).

The event is held on 22 October 2016 at the Sabah Faculty Branch of TARUC in Dongongon township, and is open to all Students of TARUC, the alumni members of TARUC and secondary school students. Format of the competition is "1 vs 1 solo mid only" and the registration fee is at a very affordable RM10 per person only.

Details of the match can be found at

A total of 46 participants showed up to the event that started at 8:30am and they wasted no time getting things started.

A spectator screen is also set-up for those who follow the matches but since it is a 1vs1 format, not all matches will be shown.

Other matches will have to be spectated live from behind the player's shoulders.

Internet connectivity is sufficient on the YES network for the matches but they weren't able to do any casting due to limited bandwidth.

In terms of prizes, there are some trophies and hampers. All participants shall receive Certificates of Participation so no one is going home empty handed. TARUC is also awarding soft skills points to their students for the event, a very nice support if you ask me.

Lucky draws for all the participants is also available.

One of the winners of the lucky draw receiving their prize.

At the end of the tournament the winners are as follows:

Gregory Chung (TARUC) is the second runner up for the event

Stanley Ling (SMK Bahang) is the first runner up

Ng Kok Wei (TARUC Alumni), is the Champion of the day!

Congratulations to all winners!!

A shot of the organizing committee, mind you that the tournament is an idea of Mr. Gregory Chung, his classmates, and students of the organizing faculty. Kudos to him, the committee and of course, TARUC for the well-executed tournament. I am looking forward to future technology and/or gaming related events, in Kota Kinabalu and in Sabah generally, hopefully a bigger one next time.

This crossover by the two leading brands is unlikely to see anyone surpassing, at least not in the near future.

Radeon Pro 400 Series Graphics: AMD’s Most Powerful Ultrathin Graphics Processors

By: Low Chern Lin

Today AMD (NASDAQ: AMD) unveiled a new family of power-efficient graphics processors, Radeon™ Pro 400 Series Graphics. Available first in the all-new 15-inch MacBook Pro, select Radeon Pro 400 Series graphics deliver extraordinary performance and efficiency gains over the prior generation to fuel modern creative efforts from anywhere inspiration strikes.

Radeon Pro 400 Series Graphics are designed specifically for today’s makers – the artists, designers, photographers, filmmakers, visualizers and engineers that shape the modern content creation era. Harnessing AMD’s acclaimed Polaris architecture, Radeon Pro 400 Series Graphics are built on the industry’s most advanced process technology for graphics processors in production today, 14nm FinFET, resulting in incredibly small transistors. To enable the thinnest graphics processor possible, AMD also employs a complex process known as ‘die thinning’ to reduce the thickness of each wafer of silicon used in the processor from 780 microns to just 380 microns, or slightly less than the thickness of four pieces of paper. Operating in a power envelope under 35W, the Radeon Pro 450, 455, and 460 Series graphics processors deliver spectacular energy efficiency and cool, quiet operation to speed through the most demanding tasks in popular creative applications.

“We couldn’t be more proud to have Radeon Pro 400 Series Graphics launching in the new 15-inch MacBook Pro, a notebook designed for performance and creativity,” said Raja Koduri, senior vice president and chief architect, Radeon Technologies Group, AMD. “Today there are millions of professional creators and designers, and a billion more who aspire to reach the next level. Radeon Pro 400 Series Graphics are a powerful and versatile creative technology that gives makers entirely new ways to create the art of the impossible no matter where they are.”

To celebrate the people behind the products, and the passion shared by makers of all sorts, AMD is launching a new program called “Meet the Creators,” bringing creators together and inviting them to share their work. Creators will have the opportunity to collaborate across a variety of fields, learn about new tools and techniques for their respective crafts, and have a chance to be featured in Radeon Pro promotional campaigns.

The “Meet the Creators” program will also explore how Radeon Pro graphics play a role in the creative process, from harnessing extraordinary graphics performance in today’s popular 2D and 3D creative applications, to using modern low-overhead graphics and compute APIs to accelerate rendering in today’s workflows. A part of that workflow is Radeon ProRender, AMD’s physically-based rendering engine planned for open source later this year, and supported via plugins across many popular 3D content creation applications including Autodesk® Maya®, and a beta plugin for Rhino®. Bolstering the list of supported applications, AMD and Maxon announced today that Radeon ProRender software will be available in a future release of Maxon’s powerful and intuitive Cinema 4D application for 3D modeling, animation and rendering, providing GPU-accelerated performance on Mac by leveraging Radeon Pro graphics and Apple’s Metal API.

For more information on Radeon Pro 400 Series Graphics, visit the “Meet the Creators” website at

Gigabyte GTX 1050 Ti G1 GAMING 4G Review

By: Low Chern Lin

NVIDIA has finally announced its latest GTX 10 series graphics card, both the GeForce GTX 1050 and GTX 1050 Ti as the company's new entry level graphics card for gamers on the budget. While we can expect for some pretty promising performance from both the GTX 1050 and GTX 1050 Ti, NVIDIA has confirmed that there will be no Founders Edition for both, and AIB partners will be presenting both GPU in various design of their own - dual/ single fan cooler, with/ without 6-pin PCIe power connector.

The GeForce GTX 1050 Ti G1 Gaming we have here today is one of the GTX 1050 Ti from Gigabyte, special thanks to Ban Leong Technologies Sdn Bhd and Gigabyte for making this review possible. With no further adieu, let's find out just how capable the Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1050 Ti G1 Gaming are.

The new G1 Gaming packaging has a much more distinguished appearance compared to how it used to look when Gigabyte first announces the branding.

Prominent features such as the design of the cooling fan and heat sink, output of the graphics card, etc can be found at the back of the box.

Similar to all of Gigabyte's G1 Gaming GeForce GTX 10 series graphics cards, the GTX 1050 Ti G1 Gaming comes with the with a much more distinguishable orange stripes on the cooler compared to the all black cooler used on the previous generation G1 Gaming cards.

The GTX 1050 Ti G1 Gaming we have here is equipped with a pair of unique fan blade design and alternate spinning design which Gigabyte claims to be able to give 23% more airflow compared to most traditional fan design, as well as reduced air turbulence for a much more effective heat dissipation.

The LED on the side of the shroud is now RGB and it can be customized using the Gigabyte Xtreme Engine software and theGigabyte has also added a 'Fan Stop' LED indicator at the side of the shroud to alert the user when the fan isn't spinning without having to go through the trouble of removing the side panels just to check on the status of the cooler fans.

According to NVIDIA, both its GeForce GTX 1050 and GTX 1050 Ti has a mere TDP of only 75W and requires a power supply with minimum power of 300W, indicating that this card doesn't requires an additional external power source. Still, we can expect the AIB partners to include an additional 6-pin power connector on their own design for better overall performance, and the GTX 1050 Ti G1 Gaming we have here are one of them.

The GTX 1050 Ti G1 Gaming has a metal back plate equipped, which act as an enhancement to the graphics card rigidity, preventing the PCB from sagging over time.

The display output option is pretty common nowadays, 1 x DVI-I connector, 1 x DisplayPort and out of the blue, 3 x HDMI port.

Cooler Master Test Bench v1.0

We mounted the Gigabyte GTX 1050 Ti G1 Gaming on our test bench as above and each and every benchmark is conducted in a room of about 30C° ambient temperature.

We ran a few graphically demanding games and synthetic benchmarks in our possession on a selected settings at 1080p, which is considered as high for much of our test as usual. The final result of each benchmark is presented in the form of the graph below:

We ran the same graphically demanding games and synthetic benchmark on 1080p with the highest achievable clock speed for both its memory and GPU that is stable enough to be able to complete each benchmark with the following values:
  • 173MHz raise on the GPU core clock
  • 1000MHz raise on the memory clock
  • Extra 25% gain on the power

Apparently, the GTX 1050 Ti G1 Gaming has an effective boost clock of 1987MHz by default and with a little extra push to both GPU clock and memory clock, we're able to achieve 2151MHz on the GPU clock and 8008MHz on the memory clock during our benchmark session as the highest clock that is stable enough to complete all the tests without any issue.

As impressive as it seems, overclocking the card doesn't increase the maximum loading temperature at all, as we've observed the same temperature reading of 40°C during idle and 60°C on load. The loading temperature can be further lowered to 53°C by maxing out the fan speed and it doesn't really sacrifice too much of the overall acoustic performance, all thanks to the unique fan blade design.

Performance wise, the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti G1 Gaming turns out to be far more capable than just an entry-level graphics card, as we managed to get an average of 30 fps on most of the AAA titles used in our test, a number which is deemed still playable by some gamers.

It's no doubt that it yields a surprisingly high effective GPU boost clock of 1987MHz on default, we still manage get a little extra performance boost with a slight push on both the GPU clock and memory clock to achieve a satisfying effective GPU boost clock to 2151MHz and 8008MHz on the memory clock before we hit the botteneck of NVIDIA's long going voltage limit (aka Green Light program). Of course, the GTX 1050 Ti that can do even better with custom a BIOS that can unleash its full potential.

As an entry level graphics card, RM879 seems to be slightly over the budget but the Gigabyte GTX 1050 Ti itself has quite a lot to offer at that price, especially for the extra cooling performance, metal backplate for enhanced rigidity, extra 6-pin power connector for some extra performance from the card.

  • Solid build quality
  • Comes with metal back plate
  • Good overclocking headroom
  • Good cooling performance
  • Ultra silent operation
  • Very low power requirement
  • Supports NVIDIA's Ansel and other NVIDIA's exclusive features
  • Lack of SLI support
  • Price could be lower

Pixel and Pixel XL guaranteed for at least 2 years Android version update

By: John Diew

Google's Nexus Support page has been updated with the Pixel's Android version update information.

As stated on the page, the Pixel phones will be guaranteed for at least 2 years of Android version updates starting from the date when the device became available on the Google Store. Which for Pixel's case, after October 2018, there would be no guarantee for additional updates.

Meanwhile, Google will continue to provide security patches for at least 3 years from the date when the device became available in the Google Store or at least 18 months from the date of the sales discontinuation, whichever is longer.

While Pixel is similar with Nexus, but they are being branded and marketed differently in order to achieve a wholly different grand vision, but Pixel should deserve their own URL though.

Personally, I believe Google should step up their game in the version updates, consider that Pixel phones are sold as premium devices, they should have at least cover 3 years of version updates instead of 2 years.

Cooler Master Announces the ‘Mini Mod Invitational’

By: Low Chern Lin

Cooler Master, a leading manufacturer of desktop components and peripherals, today announced the Mini Mod Invitational. This global modding competition invites 15 modders from 12 different countries around the world to challenge themselves by modding possibly the world’s smallest PC case.

The Mini Mod is a miniature recreation of the MasterCase 5 by Cooler Master, the first of their new flagship line of PC cases. This model is made out of wood and cardboard, but can be assembled and taken apart like a 3D puzzle. Like the MasterCase 5, the Mini Mod has multiple forms in one. It can take the shape of any of the three MasterCase 5 types: Basic, Pro, and Maker. The model also includes additional parts not included with the MasterCase 5 such as the MasterWatt Maker 1200 power supply, the MasterAir Maker 8 CPU air cooler, a motherboard, and a hard drive cage with five HDDs. The Mini Mod also has the various removable panels, fans, and airflow openings that you would find on an actual MasterCase 5.

The Mini Mod was created as a simple and entertaining way to educate novices about PC building in a much more accessible and non-intimidating way. The idea was to recreate the PC building experience while removing the fear and risk of damaging expensive components when you’re first trying to learn how to build one. While obviously a simple wooden puzzle could never fully emulate the level of knowledge and attention to detail required to build an actual PC, Cooler Master believes that projects like this are an effective way to motivate potential makers of all ages to take an interest in building their own PC.

As a part of this awareness campaign, Cooler Master has decided to host an international modding competition by invitation. 15 modders from around the world including countries such as the Malaysia, USA, Japan, Brazil, and the UK have been invited to participate in a no holds barred modding contest. Modders are not only free, but encouraged to use whatever skills and ideas they have to create the most impressive Mini Mods possible. While this is meant to be a friendly and very casual event, it is still a competition and there is an actual trophy for the modder who wins first place.

Cooler Master has opted to make this a people’s choice competition. In one week’s time, the modders will submit their final designs and the public will be able to vote on Cooler Master’s modding website. The Mini Mod with the most votes will win the trophy and the pride. Users who vote will be entered into a raffle to win a free mouse from Cooler Master. Voting and the raffle prize is open to the public worldwide. Cooler Master will cover all shipping costs for raffle winners.

Razer Unveils the New Razer Blade Pro Gaming Notebook - Portable Powerhouse With Gaming Desktop Performance

By: Low Chern Lin

Razer™, the leading lifestyle brand for gamers, today announced the new 17-inch Razer Blade Pro. Completely redesigned from ground up, the system is made specifically for enthusiasts and power users who want desktop performance but don’t want to sacrifice portability. Packed with more power than ever before possible in a notebook under an inch thick, Razer’s latest system is capable of handling virtually any task, anytime, anywhere.

The new Razer Blade Pro features the latest Intel® Core™ i7 quad-core processor and next-generation NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1080 GPU. It is the most powerful system ever built by Razer and the thinnest notebook available with a GTX 1080. Other highlights on the new Razer Blade Pro include Thunderbolt 3 for advanced connectivity options, 32 GB of DDR4 dual-channel memory, up to 2 TB of PCI M.2 SSD in RAID 0 storage and a built-in SD card reader.

While other similarly equipped desktop replacements are more than two inches thick and weigh more than 10 pounds, the new Blade Pro retains its iconic form factor. Its unibody CNC aluminum chassis still measures just 0.88 inches thin while weighing less than eight pounds. The included AC adapter also dwarfs similarly powered systems and complements the overall mobility of the Blade Pro.

Even more remarkable is the system’s thermal management system. This all new thermal management system in the Blade Pro now includes the worlds thinnest manufactured vapor chamber cooling solution in a notebook. The vapor chamber reduces heat resistance and hotspots by spreading heat quickly, evenly and efficiently. A custom fan design and dynamic heat exchanger are paired with the vapor chamber to maximize heat dissipation. This allows the Razer Blade Pro to be the most powerful computer ever assembled in such a thin chassis.

The rest of the desktop replacement notebook offers a similar no-compromises approach. A stunning 17.3-inch 4K IGZO monitor with NVIDIA G-SYNC™ technology produces the smoothest possible framerates. The display offers 100 percent Adobe RGB color accuracy to deliver stunning visuals to gamers and professionals.

Additionally, the Razer Blade Pro is the first notebook to utilize Razer’s Ultra-Low-Profile Mechanical switches. Each switch features a true actuation and reset point. Presses are registered with 65 grams of force, mimicking the feel of full-size mechanical keyboards. The keyboard and trackpad are also Powered by Razer Chroma™. This technology unlocks a virtually endless array of dazzling lighting effects that can be customized by the user or synced to display in-game events.

The specs for the Blade Pro exceed minimum hardware requirements of HTC Vive™, Oculus Rift and OSVR HDK 2, making it one of the most mobile VR-ready devices for enthusiasts and developers.

“The original 17-inch Blade was the first laptop that truly blended power and portability in a PC,” says Min-Liang Tan, Razer co-founder and CEO. “We’ve taken that approach another step further with the new Razer Blade Pro. The thermal engineering behind it is staggering. It’s incredible how far we’ve come, from having one product and a small team, to today, with a full catalog of gaming systems and a large group of engineers and designers pushing what a portable gaming machine can do.”

“It’s impressive what Razer was able to pack into the new Razer Blade Pro,” said Mark Aevermann, senior product lead for GeForce gaming laptops at NVIDIA. “They have managed to design a gaming laptop with our flagship GeForce GTX 1080, in a form factor gamers can take with them on the road.”

The 17-inch Blade Pro joins the rest of Razer’s award-winning systems lineup. The 14-inch Razer Blade sets the benchmark for mobile gaming, while the 12.5-inch Razer Blade Stealth was named the “Best PC” at CES earlier this year for its combination of performance, value, expandability and portability. Both models recently announced refreshes that are shipping now.

For more information on the new Razer Blade Pro, and to register to be notified about on-sale timing, visit Units are expected to ship this November from and select retailers.

Starts at US$3,699 / €4,199 / £3,499

October 27: Apple's Mac Event Confirmed

By: John Diew

The youngest Mac computer that Apple is currently offering is the 12 inch MacBook which was refreshed back in April 2016. The rest of the Mac family, however, is in dire for a refresh, especially the now 1000-days-old Mac Pro and the 520-days-old MacBook Pro. Not to mention the iMac and MacBook Air are equally due for a refresh as well.
