ASUS Announces VivoStick, Intel Atom Powered Pocket-sized PC at RM699

ASUS today announced VivoStick, a pocket-sized PC that turns any HDMI display or TV into a Windows PC or smart TV for work or play. VivoStick is powered by an Intel® Atom™ processor with 2GB RAM, and has 32GB of onboard storage space. It delivers fast and responsive performance and is plug-and-play-ready without the need for complicated setup. Despite its compact size, it has 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth® 4.1, USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 ports, an HDMI port and an audio jack, plus an internal cooling fan to guard against overheating. VivoStick is an affordable and space-saving PC that is ideal for the home or office.

Intel's 7th Generation Core Processors Announced, Desktop Variant To Be Available On Jan 2017

Intel has finally revealed its 7th Gen Intel Core processor family today, the final member of its 'Process, Architecture, Optimization' 3-stage development plan, with Broadwell as the product of the 'Process' stage, Skylake for 'Architecture' stage and the 7th Gen for the current 'Optimization' stage. As previous rumor which suggests that the latest gen CPU is already on its way to the OEMs, we can confirm that those are actually the mobile variant of the 7th Gen targeted for the sales in 2016 Q3. The desktop variant, however, will not be arriving by 2016 Q4 but rather, later in Jan 2017.

The 7th Gen are built on the strong foundation of the 14nm Skylake architecture Gen9 graphics and it's further optimized to deliver an even responsive performance to get users ready for the immersive internet. The new media engine as Intel claims, allows faster 4K UHD creation, watching and streaming of 4K UHD content longer than the previous gen processors, thanks to its HEVC 10-bit decode capability delivers smooth premium content playback up to 4K UHD, VP9 decode capability allows power efficient smooth 4K UHD, 4K 360° video playback while multitasking.

According to some of the slides provided by Intel, the 7th Gen measures a total of 19% more responsiveness and 12% more productivity over the previous gen Skylake CPUs, as well as battery life gain of 1.75x and 2.6x respectively while watching  4K VP9 content on YouTube and 4K HEVC 10-bit local videos.

Unboxing & Preview: SilverStone SFX Series SX500-LG Power Supply

Small form factor builds were often used as HTPC for home entertainment purposes, a lightweight gaming machine for LAN party enthusiasts who wanted to enjoy games with other enthusiasts, or perhaps gamers who always travels around and prefer a proper gaming machine over a gaming notebook. Regardless of its purposes, these builds usually require a small form factor power supply that will fit in a small form factor chassis, especially a slim type small form factor chassis like the SilverStone RVZ02.

Unlike the mainstream power supply, a small form factor power supply isn't widely available and most of them comes only in 400W or lower, which aren't capable of supporting high-end graphics card even though graphics card manufacturer like NVIDIA has vastly improved the power efficiency of its high-end graphics card, the GeForce GTX 1080 to run on a mere 500W power supply. 

SilverStone is one of the very few power supply manufacturers that offers high-powered small form factor power supply and in this article, we'll be checking out on the SFX Series SX500-LG 80 Plus Gold certified power supply, which is just about the minimum requirement to power up a GeForce GTX 1080... Or is it?

Highlighted features and some specifications of the SX500-LG can be found at the front of the box for easy reference. Detailed specifications ready with graphs can be found at the back of the box in case if one is interested to know more after looking at the highlighted features at the front of the box.

Inside the box, you'll find a user's manual, mounting frame for chassis that only takes standard sized power supply, a power cord, modular cable set consist of 24pin connector, PCIe power connector for 2 x 6+2pin, 4pin molex connector, SATA connector, and the SX500-LG itself.

As a small form factor power supply, the SX500-LG comes in a smaller dimension of 125mm x 63.5mm x 130mm and with a 120mm cooling fan installed instead of the usual 140mm cooling fan on a standard sized power supply.

On closer inspection, we can see that the SX500-LG uses a slim 120mm cooling fan to gain better compatibility among most chassis used for small form factor build.

The SX500-LG is using the same honeycomb ventilation design like most of the power supply available in the market, a design that has been proven to promote maximize airflow throughout the enclosure of the power supply.

Despite its small size, the SX500-LG is a mini beast that is capable of delivering 20A on both +3.3V and +5V rail, and a whopping 40A on the +12V rail. Technically, the power output from the SX500-LG is more than enough to support even a GeForce GTX 1080 with ease.

As it's specially tailored for small form factor build, on the SX500-LG comes with a fully modular design and the connectors available are meant for a mini-ITX form factor motherboard and one graphics card. You can use it on a build with ATX form factor motherboard of course, but that will defeat the purpose of its small form factor design. 

User Experience
As Tech Critter do not own any industrial grade load tester to perform intensive tests on the power supplies on hand, we will be performing tests from the end user's angle. 

We've mounted the SilverStone SFX Series SX500-LG on our Raven Series RVZ02 small form factor test system and have gone through numerous tests which involve stress test and overclocking various hardware throughout the weeks; AIDA64 System Stability Test is done using Intel i7 4790K installed on the ASUS Republic of Gamers Maximus VI Impact, as well as FurMark stress test using all of NVIDIA's latest GeForce GTX 10 Series graphics cards. We're glad to report that the SX500-LG easily survived the stress test with our i7 4790K overclocked to 4.6GHz and all the GeForce GTX 10 Series graphics cards overclocked to its best stable performance.

Final Thoughts
While the SX500-LG might be a little costly for a 500W 80 Plus gold rated power supply, we shouldn't overlook its features such as small form factor and fully modular cable design, all cables with flexible flat array, high power output on the +12V rail, which is an obvious beneficial features for a small form factor build. If you're really into building yourself a small form factor powerhouse, the RM435 that you'll be spending on the SX500-LG is definitely a worthy investment.

Thermal Grizzly Kyronaut Thermal Compound Review

Thermal Grizzly is a rather new name in the thermal paste market but it didn't take long for the company to step into the spotlight as both its Kyronaut and Hydronaut thermal paste quickly took the crowd by storm and with all the positive feedbacks and reviews that are flooding in, Thermal Grizzly is now the new king in the thermal paste market. 

We ourselves has been curious of the Kyronaut since our visit to the HWBot World Tour 2016 and we were able to secured a Thermal Grizzly Kyronaut 5.5g syringe from Thermal Grizzly Malaysia to finally experience the much endorsed thermal paste ourselves here at Tech Critter's lab.

The packaging is rather simple and not as attractive as most of the renown thermal compound that comes in a hard plastic or fancy box, but we find this a more preferred packaging as it's way much easier to unbox when you're in a hurry. Thermal Grizzly offers both of its Kyronaut and Hydronaut in the same type of packaging, except for the label stickers used to differentiate both of the company's thermal compound. 

Inside the packaging, you'll find a quick start guide, Thermal Grizzly sticker, a rubber TIM applicator which is to be attached to the syringe and the syringe containing the Kyronaut thermal compound.

Thermal Performance Test
We've conducted the test with an Intel Core i7 4790K running at 4.6GHz using a Raijintek Triton 240 liquid cooler and the grain of rice application method. We've conducted a set of burn-in test to see how well will each of the thermal compound used performs. As curing time is always required for most of the thermal compound, so we divided the burn-in test into few sets and each set of test is to run for days in order to monitor the supposed curing time. Temperature reading is then recorded and presented in the graph as below:

As we ramp up the heat with prime95 for maximum heat output, we can observe temperature spiked up to the range of 76°C ~78°C during the first set of the test. Lower temperature reading can be observed after a few days across all the thermal compound used in the test, displaying different curing time of its own. 

The Thermal Grizzly Kyronaut performs a whole lot better than we've expected, beating some of the market-leading thermal compound with the least curing time and best thermal performance displayed.

With such excellence displayed throughout the test, we have no reason to doubt the Thermal Grizzly Kyronaut as one of the most popular thermal compound used by PC enthusiasts and overclockers around the globe.

If you find that RM69 for the 5.5g syringe might be an overly expensive amount of money to pay for a thermal compound, here's the deal, it beats pretty much all of the popular high-performance thermal compound available and you can opt for the RM29 1g syringe, which is more than enough for few times of generous amount of pea-size application.

20% More Power Efficient Than GDDR5X, Samsung To Debut GDDR6 In 2018

As the 2nd Generation High-Bandwidth Memory (HBM2) is about to make its debut to the consumer market via AMD's next generation graphics, SK Hynix is already preparing for the HBM3 that is capable of delivering a whopping 2TB/s memory bandwidth. Samsung however, is working on a relatively inexpensive standard, GDDR6, hoping to be able to deliver it by 2018.

According to Samsung, the proposed GDDR6 will offer a much higher bandwidth of 16Gbps, which is roughly 60% more bandwidth over the 10Gbps offered by the current GDDR5X. Of course, higher memory bandwidth isn't the only thing to expect from GDDR6, as it also feature a much more efficient LP5 controller that is capable of reducing up to 20% power draw over GDDR5X while maintaining a higher capable clock speed in proportionate to the power drawn.
