Unboxing & Review: Armaggeddon Molotov-3 Mobile Gaming Headset

Armaggeddon is a renowned brand in the local gaming community for its budget oriented gaming peripherals, we have reviewed quite a number of their products that is worth recommending for gamers on a tight budget.

Just recently, a care package from Armaggeddon containing the Molotov-3 mobile gaming headset arrived at Tech Critter's lab. Armaggegddon has specifically mentioned that the Molotov-3 is a 'Mobile Gaming Headset' instead of the usual 'Gaming Headset' we've seen on the market, but let's find out how will it perform if we try it out on a non-mobile device?

Packaging

The Molotov-3 comes in a grey minimalist box with a boastful statement of 'The Ultimate Mobile Gaming Headset' along with some of its features highlighted at the front of the box.

If you need more information of the Molotov-3, a brief but detailed list of information can be found on the side of the box.

The back of the box contains information in regards to the Molotov-3 in various languages, as well as a brief information on Armaggeddon itself, manufacturer's warranty etc.

Opening the lid reveals a small cutout window on the box allows user to see the actual product without having to open up the entire packaging.

The Content

Inside the box you'll find the Molotov-3 mobile gaming headset, a "gooding" thick protective pouch, product warranty card and a audio jack splitter.

The anti-tangle flat cables, helps to prevent tangled cables when stored in narrow spaces.

The tiny microphone price located on the cable, looks like your ordinary microphone from your mobile phone headset.

Enjoying your mobile phone games and a wild random call just came out of nowhere? This is the button you can press to answer that wild random call.

The headband pleather cushion isn't too soft to the touch, but it's still considered to be acceptable for the price you're paying for.

The ear cups appears to be rather small, the drivers are definitely pressing against your ears for the entire time if you have big ears. Pleather cushion usually helps to isolate against noise from the outside while contains the sound within the ear cups for better overall experience, but things seems a little different in this case.

The Molotov-3 comes in a total of 4 design, the review unit we have here is the digital camouflage design.

Testing: Putting on the Armaggeddon Molotov-3
The very first thing we noticed at the moment we have it on our head is the small ear cups and direct clamping force that is applied directly onto our ears, which in the end causes discomfort after hours of usage. Definitely not the type of gaming headset for those with big ears.

Testing: Gaming on Mobile Devices
We've tried the Molotov-3 on a few selected mobile devices such as mobile phones and tables, Nintendo DS, Playstation Portable and we're glad to report that it works on all the devices in our list.

Gaming wise, the overall sound quality is still acceptable as we're not expecting any complicated sounds from the mobile games tested - Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, Patapon 3, LocoRoco, God of War: Chains of Olympus, The World Ends With You, Mario Kart DS is among the game titles tested.

Testing: Gaming, Music, Movies on PC
While it does works okay for most game titles, the speech, music and sound effect heard from games is definitely less immersive due the fact that the Molotov-3 is more towards the bass compared to treble. For movies and music test, the Molotov-3 did fairly okay for movies and music that is infused with a lot of bass, but it's an immediate let down if you switch to movies and music that focuses more on the speech and other micro sounds.

Testing: Microphone
We did a quick test on the microphone as well with recorded speech, skype call with different level of voice tones and the result turns out to be another let down. The volume of the recorded speech and skype call is so low and you will need to hold the microphone very close in order to deliver a clear speech to the recipient or record.

Verdict
At the price of RM99.90, the Molotov-3 is an affordable gaming headset from Armaggeddon. Despite of all the complaints we have after trying it out for weeks, we can't overlook the fact that the Armaggeddon Molotov-3 wasn't really intended for PC Gamers who seek ultra decent sound quality from a budget gaming headset, but for mobile gamers who are looking for a decent gaming headset for their mobile devices. Hence, if you're a PC gamer who is looking for a bang for the buck gaming headset, the Molotov-3 is definitely out of the question since it is made for mobile devices.

Pros
  • Affordable
  • Compatible with most mobile devices
  • Anti-tangle flat cables helps to prevent tangled cables when kept in narrow spaces
  • Comes with thick protective pouch
Cons
  • Not suitable for those with big ears due to the small ear cups
  • No volume control
  • Very low volume on the microphone

ASRock SKY OC Unlocks Skylake Non-K CPUs Making Them Overclockable

Intel® Skylake K series CPUs are on every hardcore overclocker's wish list, due to the fact that they are the only ones with an unlocked multiplier that allows users to overclock the CPU frequency effortlessly. However, there seems to be a shortage of these ultra high performing processors lately. Thankfully ASRock has prepared a nice Christmas present for the overclocking community named SKY OC, an alternative for users to overclock any Intel® Skylake i7/i5/i3 or even Pentium non K CPUs on their ASRock Z170 motherboard.

Engineers at ASRock picked up from where they left off last time, and decided that besides DDR4 memory modules, there might be a way to overclock Intel® non-K CPUs without tinkering the multiplier. So here you have the game changing SKY OC which is obtainable simply by a BIOS upgrade from ASRock's official website. It's not the same as overclocking an Intel® K series CPU, because it's mainly changing the BCLK, but it will be an interesting alternative while people are still waiting for their K series CPUs to come down the chimney. Lab tests show that the once not overclockable Intel® Core i5-6400 CPU can now be overclocked up to a 60% frequency boost with SKY OC on ASRock's Z170 Pro4!

One might wonder, "this is too good to be true, what's the catch?" Well, if you had to ask, there are two almost unnoticeable limitations. The first one is the onboard Intel® graphics will be disabled while SKY OC is applied, meaning that users are required to install a graphics card. The second limitation is that CPU Turbo Ratio and C-State will also be disabled.

While ASRock SKY OC breathes life into Intel® non K series CPUs, currently it is still exclusive to motherboards with Intel's Z170 chipset. But have faith in ASRock's skillful engineers, sooner or later more Christmas gifts from ASRock are going to be delivered.

Apacer announces AS720, the World’s First Dual Interface SSD

Apacer Technology is proud to release the unrivaled smart SSD, AS720, the first dual interface SSD worldwide with the newest USB 3.1 and TYPE-C connector, the perfect combination with color gold iMac and MacBook. AS720 provides the newest application to digital film cameras of Blackmagic. The high speed AS720 allows editing directly off it without time wasting file copying. It delivers the smoothest and more convenient high-speed transmission experience. Windows-To-Go function, compact size, anti-collision and anti-shock protection, all leads mobile storage solutions forward to the new field for high efficiency and ultimate speed. The moment you use AS720, you know you have never felt anything like it.

USB3.1 TYPE-C Connector High-efficient Interface - Go Wherever You Want
AS720, the first SSD equipped with SATA III and TYPE-C, USB3.1, is comprised of strictly selected and stable flash chips and adopts two-in-one high-speed transmission interface design. Actual test shows that data access through SATA III interface enables the read speed up to 540MB/s, and the sequential write speed reaches up to 450MB/s. Super fast AS720 moves shots from camera to edit instantly. AS720 can be mounted on the Mac or Windows and because the speeds are extremely high you can edit directly off the SSD without time wasting file copying. It also demonstrates industry-leading read/write speed up to 540/450MB/s when connected to USB3.1 interface for file transmission. For example, it takes less than 15 seconds to copy an HD video that is 5GB in size. Users can enjoy an immediate start-up and ongoing high quality operations in both business and leisure time use.

Unbelievable Thinness and Compactness - Wider Applications with Super Speed
AS720 240GB SSD realizes incredible thinness and compactness: only 0.7 cm in thickness and 75g in weight. Its body combines exquisite gold with metallic cutting design, subtly demonstrating a clean fashion style in its low profile. AS720 SSD features 30G anti-vibration and 3000G anti-shock protections, so there’s no need to worry about data corruption even on the go. As the structure doesn’t contain mobile parts, data damage in collisions can be prevented, and the heat and noise produced by a traditional hard drive are no longer a problem.

Besides, AS720 boasts built-in advanced wear leveling and Error Correction Code (ECC) functions and supports Win7 Trim command, ensuring enhanced reliability of data transmission and longer service life for higher stability of data storage. If used as a system hard disk, it can effectively improve the response capability of computer platform, strengthen multitasking function and significantly improve start-up speed and read/write efficiency.

Apacer indicated that, as customer demands more for storage devices, portable SSD with fast speed and high capacity is the key mastering mobility. Apacer’s latest AS720 SSD combines dual-interface for high-speed transmission with SSD’s superior stable performance, reaching unmatched lightning-fast speed and durability over traditional external hard drive, making itself the prime choice among the new-generation mobile storage devices.

Unboxing & Review: Logitech K480 Bluetooth Multi-Device Keyboard

Hello ladies and gentlemen, this is Jack from Tech-Critter bringing you an unboxing and brief review of Logitech's K480 keyboard.

Released earlier this year, Logitech's K480 which comes in two colours - white or black with a tinge of neon green, is a multi-device Bluetooth keyboard that can switch between three electronical devices seamlessly. It is compatible with a wide range of products from Apple, Windows, Android, and even game consoles like the PS4 and the Xbox One!

Logitech decided to go with the minimalistic approach for said keyboard, as it is cleanly packed and the only things included are small flyers with some basic instructions, and a link to their site for more details.

The keyboard itself runs on two AAA batteries which are already included during purchase rather than the more common cable or rechargeable battery methods of providing power. The AAA batteries are housed in a compartment at the bottom where you can slide off the cover and replace the juiced out batteries easily. Logitech has claimed that the AAA batteries will easily last consumers two years through moderate usage, which in my opinion is actually quite decent!

The keys on the keyboard should be satisfactory for most people too, as they are large, have good travel distance, and provides decent tactile feedback. The keys produce a pronounced plastic click when you type on them, which may or may not be frowned upon depending on the individual. The keyboard also has various function keys that are integrated for iOS, Android, Mac OS, Windows and the likes. You can wake or sleep the screen, enter passcodes to unlock your devices, capture screenshots, control media etc. all through the cleverly designed function keys.

The keyboard also has a rubberized cradle at the top to hold handheld devices. The cradle is wide enough for most phones and tablets to sit side by side, and the keyboard itself will stay in position without the possibility of the devices toppling over regardless of the orientation the devices are put into at cradle at.

Moving on to the actual user experience of the K480, I must say, it is pleasantly simple to use. Users will be able to pair most devices with said keyboard easily just by following the brief but clear instructions that are shown in the form of an explanatory sticker on the keyboard itself. The general gist of it is that you select the number you want to assign your device to on the switch-dial. Then you hold the "i" key for Apple devices, or the "PC" key for everything else to initiate the pairing process. This is indicated by a blue flashing light just next to the buttons. Lastly, go to the device's Bluetooth setting and select the K480, and voilĂ  your device is paired with the keyboard. Now, just rinse and repeat the process for the remaining two devices and you're set!

Switching between devices is done by turning the switch-dial to the number that you assigned to the device you're trying to use. Users no longer have to constantly pick up their phones or tablets again shortly after they just put it down just to reply a quick text message or check their notifications. The switching process is seamless and it takes less than a second to connect. This hassle-free method of granting keyboard control to three different devices truly increases productivity be it at the office space or at home.

Verdict
With all that said however, no product is devoid of it's cons, and the Logitech K480 is no different. The first issue, is it's all-plastic construction. Almost every part of the keyboard except the rubberized part of the cradle, switch-dial and the four grommets at the bottom are made entirely out of plastic. This decision might be due to Logitech trying to increase said product's reach towards a wider market by lowering down said keyboard's cost, but it definitely did make an impact aesthetically as it lost the premium look and feel. This is ever so evident when it is compared to other products available on the market.

Other than that, the keyboard itself wouldn't exactly be what I call thin, and it also weighs in at 810 grams. Is it a portable device? Yes, but just barely as I don't see myself taking this wherever I go. The K480 just seems to be focused more on a stationary environment like homes and offices.

In conclusion, if you are a student, businessman, or even just someone looking for productivity and convenience at home or at the office then the Logitech K480 is definitely for you. For the retail price of RM150 to RM200 depending on where you're looking at, the price and value of said keyboard well outweighs it's cons! Overall, I found Logitech's K480 to be a competent and versatile keyboard that is definitely worth it's asking price. Once again, this has been Jack bringing you a brief unboxing and review of Logitech's K480 keyboard, stay tuned for everything tech related right here at Tech-Critter. Thank you for reading and I hope you have a nice day!

MSI responded to the recent Intel Skylake bending concern with CPU GUARD 1151

The recent PCB bending issue on Intel Skylake CPU has become a concern for the end users to choose the 'right' 3rd party brand CPU cooler that is free from the bending issue and there has been a number of renown CPU cooler makers that stand out to assure the end users of their product. But none so far, a motherboard manufacturer did what MSI has announced today.

MSI has received news from various media websites about possible bending of Intel® 6th Generation Processors when using heavy-weight cooling solutions. Possible bending might not occur straight away, however, as your system sits on its desk or moving it anywhere, could result in unwanted effects. To make sure you will never encounter this problem we developed the CPU GUARD 1151 to protect your Socket 1151 Intel® Xeon® E3 v5 / Core™ / Pentium® or Celeron® processor which strengthens the corners to withstand more vertical pressure.

Besides protecting your CPU, the CPU GUARD 1151 is also the perfect tool for anyone looking to ‘delid’ their 6th Generation Intel® processor. When re-applying the IHS, the design of the CPU GUARD 1151 tightly locks the HIS ensuring it will stay in its place and you will never have to worry about optimal thermal performance or it moving. Recently the CPU GUARD 1151 was used during an overclocking event, helping top overclockers push their Skylake CPU to the max, breaking world records.
