Unboxing & Review: Sapphire Nitro R7 370 4GB

Sapphire, a familiar name to those who has been with the red team for the past decades and it is known to offers ridiculously affordable price of their graphics cards compared to majority of its competitor. Sapphire is one of the very few brands that focuses heavily on AMD Radeon GPU, much like to how EVGA focuses on NVIDIA GeForce GPU.

Mega thanks to the awesome guys at ROOTS Asia Pacific for sending over a Sapphire Nitro R7 370 for today's review. AMD's R7 series GPU is pretty much similar to NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 950 which both are meant for games that is less taxing to the GPU itself such as DOTA 2, League of Legends, Counter Strike: Global Offensive and many more that falls into the same category.  

Unlike the ordinary R7 370 we've seen, the Sapphire Nitro R7 370 comes with a little more extras - factory overclocked and a whopping 4GB worth of GDDR5 VRAM. Now, let's see how will the Sapphire Nitro R7 370 do in our tests.

Sapphire has gone with its usual cyborg image at the front of the box, along with some of the highlighted features such as factory overclocked, Dual-X cooling fan, 4GB GDDR5 VRAM, etc.

Overview

The Sapphire Nitro R7 370 undoubtedly one of the best looking entry level graphics card, much better looking that the previous R7 270. 

The signature Dual-X fans that has been used on the previous generation of Sapphire's R7 and R9 graphics card. 


Powering up the Sapphire Nitro R7 370 requires a 6-pin PCIe from a power supply with a minimum power of 500W, as suggested by Sapphire. 



The PCB however, has an unused slot for a 6pin connector which somehow looks a little inferior.


A single CrossFire setup is possible for the R7 370 in case if you've decided to get another one in the future to slightly juice up your system.



Output option for the Sapphire Nitro R7 370 consist of 1 x DVI-D, 1 x DVI-I, 1 x HDMI and 1 x DisplayPort.

We've conducted our test by installing the Sapphire Nitro R7 370 to our test bench as above. Each and every benchmark is conducted in a room with 30C° ambient temperature.


Performance, Overclocking
We ran a few graphically demanding games and synthetic benchmark in our possession on 1080p with the highest achievable clock speed for both its memory and GPU that is stable enough to be able to complete each benchmark with the following values:
  • Maximum boost clock of 1125MHz 
  • 6320MHz on the memory clock
  • 1.2V on the voltage for GPU
That's a 140MHz gain from the stock boost clock of 985MHz for GPU and 720MHz gain from the stock memory clock of 5600MHz in total.

Performance

We ran a few graphically demanding games and synthetic benchmarks in our possession on a selected settings, which is considered as high for much of our test as usual.The final result of each benchmark is presented in the form of the graph below:



Temperature
We've ran a 15 minute burn-in test on the FurMark GPU stress test utility with the fan operate under normal mode and maximum fan speed mode and the temperature for both test is recorded and populated in the graph below.





Verdict
The Sapphire Nitro R7 370 might be marketed as an entry level graphics card that is meant for MOBA games, but our benchmark result shows that it is more capable than just handling the common MOBA game. Most of the graphically demanding games used for our benchmark is set on ultra settings and the Sapphire Nitro R7 370 managed to keep most of the games running on 30fps, which is deemed playable.

Compared to the cheapest GTX 950 which priced about the same as the Sapphire Nitro R7 370, RM799 isn't really an appealing price for what it can deliver. However, if you really need to enjoy your game on multiple display on a budget gaming system, the Sapphire Nitro R7 370 that comes with 4GB VRAM will do far better.

Noctua celebrates 10-year anniversary

Vienna, October 29th 2015 – Noctua today celebrated its 10-year anniversary. Professional programmers should take notice – this may be the best mechanical keyboard for coding in 2016.

Ultimate Hacking Keyboard Key Features

Ergonomic, Adaptable Layout
At its core, the Ultimate Hacking Keyboard is a mix between an ErgoDoxand 60%, with 65 keys. This makes it much smaller than a standard tenkeyless mechanical keyboard. The first thing you’ll notice about the UHK is it splits in two, to better fit the ergonomics of your hands and wrists. While split, the two halves of the keyboard are connected with a single curly cable that expands as needed.

Being split apart for more natural positioning is the main advantage of the ErgoDox layout, but the UHK can also snap back together to form a single keyboard. This gives it a huge advantage over ErgoDox in that it’s much more portable. Also, having the ability to blend in and look more like a normal keyboard may be preferable in situations when you don’t want to draw attention to yourself. Some people may just plain not like a split keyboard layout, and the Ultimate Hacking Keyboard does a great job at pleasing everyone.


Productivity Hacks
Here’s where the real magic of the Ultimate Hacking Keyboard comes to light. There are 4 different layers to the keyboard layout, as seen below.


The Base layer is your standard alphanumeric layout.


By holding the Fn key, you access the Fn layer which holds shortcuts for your media, as well as often used applications. There are also some OS commands here, like sleeping or locking your PC.


The Mod layer holds keys that handle the “Lock” functions, as well as your standard navigation keys. It also has shortcuts for closing a tab, opening a tab, switching between tabs, and switching between windows.


Finally, the most interesting layer – the Mouse layer. By holding down the Mouse key, you can control all functions of a mouse directly from the keyboard. This includes moving the cursor, clicking, using the scroll wheel, and accelerating/decelerating the cursor. While I’m not that excited to try to control my cursor with a keyboard, being able to quickly wheel up or down a page without having my hands leave the keyboard sounds awesome.

You can also program your own application-specific keymaps and macros onto the keyboard and save them onto stored memory. You can also share these keymaps with other UHK owners.

Ultimate Hacking Keyboard Hardware
The hardware used on any device that has to connect and break apart frequently is a concern, so the team decided to use steel connector guides mounted to the stainless steel backplate for durability as well as a pair of magnets to ensure the keyboard stays connected when it should, and breaks apart smoothly.


The UHK will connect to your computer via standard USB cable, and comes with a lock screw to keep the pieces always connected in case you’re transporting it a long distance or prefer it in one piece.

The small LED display in the upper-left piece will display the Caps Lock status, shows if it’s connected to the Agent configuration application, if “adaptive mode” is enabled (auto-switching keymaps according to what app your PC is currently using), and the abbreviation of the current keymap.

It wouldn’t be the Ultimate Hacking Keyboard if it wasn’t customizable to your exact preference. You can choose either ANSI or ISO key layouts, and 6 different Greetech MX switch types. This includes Blue, Brown, Red, Black, Clear, and Green.

The keycaps will be laser-engraved ABS and feature non-standard Space, Mod, right Ctrl, and Backspace keys. If you wanted to replace those, you’d likely need to go a 3D printed route until the company can offer something new.

Western Digital Announces Acquisition of SanDisk

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 22 October 2015 — Western Digital® Corporation (NASDAQ: WDC) and SanDisk Corporation (NASDAQ: SNDK) today announced that they have entered into a definitive agreement under which Western Digital will acquire all of the outstanding shares of SanDisk for a combination of cash and stock. 

The offer values SanDisk common stock at US$86.50 per share or a total equity value of approximately US$19 billion, using a five-day volume weighted average price ending on October 20, 2015 of US$79.60 per share of Western Digital common stock. If the previously announced investment in Western Digital by Unisplendour Corporation Limited closes prior to this acquisition, Western Digital will pay US$85.10 per share in cash and 0.0176 shares of Western Digital common stock per share of SanDisk common stock; and if the Unisplendour transaction has not closed or has been terminated, US$67.50 in cash and 0.2387 shares of Western Digital common stock per share of SanDisk common stock. The transaction has been approved by the boards of directors of both companies. 

The combination is the next step in the transformation of Western Digital into a storage solutions company with global scale, extensive product and technology assets, and deep expertise in non-volatile memory (NVM). With this transaction, Western Digital will double its addressable market and expand its participation in higher-growth segments. SanDisk brings a 27-year history of innovation and expertise in NVM, systems solutions and manufacturing. The combination also enables Western Digital to vertically integrate into NAND, securing long-term access to solid state technology at lower cost. 

The proposed combination creates significant value for both SanDisk and Western Digital shareholders. Western Digital brings a successful track record of M&A with a number of acquisitions over the last several years helping to fuel innovation, create value and strongly position the company to capture higher-growth opportunities. In addition, Western Digital's operational excellence, coupled with the recently announced 

decision by China's Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) allowing Western Digital to integrate substantial portions of its WD and HGST businesses, is expected to generate additional cost synergies.

Western Digital and SanDisk's complementary product lines, including hard disk drives ("HDDs"), solid-state drives ("SSDs"), cloud datacenter storage solutions and flash storage solutions, will provide the foundation for a broader set of products and technologies from consumer to datacenter. Both companies have strong R&D and engineering capabilities and a rich base of fundamental technologies with over 15,000 combined patents issued or pending worldwide. 

Toshiba has been a long-term strategic partner to SanDisk for 15 years. The joint venture (JV) with Toshiba will be ongoing, enabling vertical integration through a technology partnership driven by deep collaboration across design and process capabilities. The JV provides stable NAND supply at scale through a time-tested business model and extends across NVM technologies such as 3D NAND. 

Steve Milligan will continue to serve as chief executive officer of the combined company, and the company will remain headquartered in Irvine, California. Upon closing, Sanjay Mehrotra is expected to join the Western Digital Board of Directors. 

Led by a seasoned management team, Western Digital has a strong track record of integrating acquisitions to create value. The company expects to achieve full annual run-rate synergies of US$500 million within 18 months post-closing. The transaction is expected to be EPS accretive on a non-GAAP basis within 12 months of the transaction close. Pending the closing of the transaction, Western Digital expects to continue paying its quarterly dividend and plans to suspend its share buyback program. 

The transaction will be financed by a mix of cash, new debt financing and Western Digital stock. In connection with the transaction, Western Digital expects to enter into new debt facilities totaling US$18.4 billion, including a US$1.0 billion revolving credit facility. The proceeds from the new debt facilities are 

expected to be used to pay part of the purchase price, refinance existing debt of Western Digital and SanDisk and pay transaction related fees and expenses. If SanDisk's cash balance falls below certain thresholds at the time of transaction close, the merger agreement provides for an adjustment to the mix of cash and stock consideration.

The transaction is subject to approval by SanDisk shareholders and, in the event that the Unisplendour transaction does not close, Western Digital shareholders, receipt of regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions. The transaction is expected to close in the third calendar quarter of 2016.

BofA Merrill Lynch and J.P. Morgan are acting as lead financial advisors to Western Digital and will provide committed financing for the transaction. Also, Credit Suisse is acting as a financial advisor and providing committed financing, and RBC Capital Markets is providing committed financing. Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP and Baker & McKenzie are acting as legal advisors to Western Digital.
